Winning is boring, loosing is invigorating

It's really funny how the game suddenly becomes boring when you start winning. It's all good and interesting while you are in "defense" mode, the goals are clear and everyone comes closer together. But once you go on to the offensive and actually win, the next question/answer is not that obvious.

One would say to always go for the resources, but that doesn't keep people interested in the game. There has to be some higher goal to motivate them all. Look at what happened with the "Free Texas" campaign. While in preparation, eSerbia was growing continuously, but at the point when it was dropped, most people simply wandered off.

So the question is, how to find this "Holy Grail" and keep it active for a very long time. Nationalism seems to work all the time, but even that is short lived. What's the point of conquering your neighbor for the 15th time, that's no real long term goal.

In my personal opinion, one of the most interesting things about this game is/was the interaction with distant cultures. By eliminating the possibility to write in different countries, a good chunk of that got lost. The remainder of it was gone when regions had to be connected. I still believe that colonies were a very fun part of the game and would love to see them come back.
