"John Lennon said, "Imagine there is no religion"... - J. Max

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as on

The word
"Religion," comes from a word meaning "to bind." This implies the kind of union with God that is also at the root of the word "Yoga."
Unfortunately, in striving after God, we often get tied up in knots. This is because we get caught up in words, and in our differences.

If I strive to be closer to God, and I make the mistake of convincing myself that I am closer to God than you are, I might convince myself I am better then you, but it has brought me further from knowing God. The problem with the human mind is that it evolved this need to compare and categorize as a survival skill, and it doesn't know when to quit.

I don't think he is really advocating giving up everything because I don't think that's the point of the song. He knows that we're not going to chuck all our well-established ideas and practices, but he's inviting us to make a journey of the mind, to use our imagination. What if? What would you do differently? If his song makes you reevaluate your behavior in any positive manner, even a small way, might you not decide to carry out this behavior in the "real" world? Would it make a difference?

what a wonderful article
