Thoughts on Congress

Dan 1,826, 11:33 Published in USA ZDA s strani fingerguns

This has been my first real term as a Congressman. I never really desired to hold the position before, although I did accidentally win once as a blocker a number of years ago. Nothing against Congress, really, but it always seemed like the best action was in the Cabinet. Congress was for like...talking about stuff. I LIKE ACTION! After serving as eUS VP last month, I decided to take a stab at Congress to see if maybe I was missing something.

The Feds supported me in my run and put me near the top of the list, despite my lack of experience. Feds are best. Thanks, bros.

After winning a spot, 2 things happened immediately- someone solicited me for my vote for Speaker of the House, and I was told to do like a million things on the eUS forum.

Ok well not really a million, but it was evident that pretty much everything happens there. You sign in to let people know you're alive and active, then you vote on various things, like Speaker and whatnot. The one issue that seemed to consume the largest chunk of time this month, however, was the BUDGET.

Lots to think about there, and of course different philosophies at play. Money is a bit tight for a variety of reasons. Some of it is temporary, but some of it could be a long-term problem. We really only spend money on military as it is, so what to do? Cut the military budget drastically so we can save money but leave ourselves vulnerable? Only cut it a little so we can stay relatively balanced but jeopardize our military strength? Or don't really cut it at all and do some deficit spending so we can whoop some ass on the battlefield?

We eventually came to a compromise. Not everyone was happy, but that's how compromises work.

Took forever.

But what's the rush? Apparently that was the extent of what Congress actually does, minus the in-game votes where we are essentially told how to vote on everything. I'm not really complaining about that part. The information is all available, but most Congressmen aren't going to put the work in to find it all and quite honestly we don't always have time. Being told what the 'right thing to do' is kind of makes sense considering the limitations. I tried to read up on everything I could and I still didn't get to it all and I know I missed at least 1 vote. It just slipped through the cracks.

The in-game voting is essentially keeping our MPPs going with the people we should, turning them down with baddies. Declaring Natural Enemies. Approving/rejecting donations. Pretty routine stuff. Not terribly exciting, and I'm sure once you've done this for a few months, it's easy peasy.

It seems like once the budget is passed, everyone vanishes. Now part of this could be due to the upcoming holiday, but based on comments made by other Congressmen, passing a budget marks the end of the job for the month.

There were a couple of discussions started...ways to maybe improve things and solve problems, but Congress is apparently powerless to actually do any of it. The discussions eventually stop or things have to go to a Cabinet member to put into action.

Why do I bring this up? A few reasons, really. Congressional elections are right around the corner (as always). I would like to be elected again. More importantly, though, I want to know if you think this is how things should work? Some people complain that Congress doesn't do anything. Others say when they try to do things, they always screw it up. And still others think how many Congress seats you hold as a party or how many times you've been an elected as an individual is the ultimate measure of success and power. It's seriously important.

I'm not sure where I stand yet. I'm still a noob when it comes to Congress. But I want to know more.

What should Congress be doing?

What are they actually doing?

Is it a real position of power, or is it just another medal to collect?

What makes a good Congressman anyway, considering what the actual job entails?

Other than the obvious damage the AFA does with their Congressmen, how does Congress give a party POWER?

Lots of questions and personally, I'd like some answers. Or at least get this conversation going. Tomorrow on eNPR, I'm going to talk about Congress. I would like your input. Ask your questions in the comments below, send a pm or tune in to the show at 18:00erep time (9pm Eastern). Join us in #enpr.

If you have ADD, just read the bold parts.

V good conversation to have.

fingerguns Dan 1,826, 11:36

Dang Candor. That was quick lol

Candor Dan 1,826, 11:44

I was perusing new articles at exactly the time you posted, lol.

This is maybe the best noob discription of Congress that I've ever seen. You happen to be perfectly suited to report and review what you saw/learned about Congress, fate meets opportunity!

I have less problem with any specific way Congress is set to operate now than I do with the jerks that want to shut down any conversation about such current practices constantly, and typically rudely. For fun and example...

...try starting a conversation on the role of Congress IN Congress. And then take any position slightly against current practice.

Better yet, ask a noob Congressman to do it for you (you probably wouldn't get fair wrath).

My experience (watching ,not usually participating) is that any idea that proposes to change anything in Congress is an excuse to bully a fellow rather severely.

Not always, but far too often. Congress should be able to discuss it's role in the nation.

>Congress should be able to discuss it's role in the nation.

That's the idea here.

As mechanics change and our domestic situation changes, we should probably take a look at how and why we do things. So much of this was developed a loooong time ago. It was a different game then.

It's almost like real congress.

I say almost because you actually decided on a budget.

DokJon Dan 1,826, 12:17

Tune into eNPR tomorrow! I always enjoy it with FG as host. She's funny and makes the show a lot easier to listen to, which would have otherwise been just a bunch of dudes talking.

I'm especially looking forward to tomorrow's show because some of big guys will be on as guests!

Well, let me know what you learn and how the discussion goes, and I'm glad you're bringing the topic to the floor (and not me, lol).

Hi Ajay

olivermellors Dan 1,826, 14:33

The budget: is it made public during debate and is the debate made public while it occurs?

Bucephalus92 Dan 1,826, 14:54

NOTHING that happens on the Congressional Forums has any effect on eRepublik...it is simply a place where the 'Pfeifferist' learn who stands against them and uses that knowledge to keep those citizens out of the 'power loop'...then they tell everyone how to vote in game in order to retain their power...

'The budget: is it made public during debate and is the debate made public while it occurs?'
You're joking right? The Budget is Top Secret...only Congress members may see it...

Malpazar Dan 1,827, 08:28

I feel that congress is not necessarily a power position but more of a support position.
Congress seems to be the balancing force that keeps countries from being monarchies, as its intended use is to vote on various things that congress or the president proposes insuring that no one side can dictate all laws. Sure congressional majority usually means more votes, but (game mechanically) the people choose to have those people in and trust their decision making.
Congress has its use.

bigcdizzle Dan 1,827, 11:15

Ichabod, You are not even attempting to make sense any more. I am the first person to say that I dislike the forum, but don't start all this bullsh*t about how it's just a tool for everyone to keep you down. I would pity you, but you seem to be doing that quite enough on your own.

Just out of curiosity, is it still customary for congressfolks to donate the 5 gold from their medal to the treasury?

The only real power spots are in the people. Take the people away and the congress, cabinet, and president are nothing. And Serbia would own us already

I have been gathering members for a meta alliance to sell damage to the highest bidder to offset loses caused by the lack of bonuses our past and present leaders have lost for us.

If anyone is interested in joining this alliance please PM me. I don't care what your political beliefs are or what country you serve. This will be used as a tool to solicit cooperation from the US government buy turning critical allied battles in the favor of the enemy until the us government brings back bonuses

This was a great post and wonderful insights to congress. Thank you!

TheNorm Dan 1,827, 22:33

I thought therefor I was ? Seriously tho good post, ppl should be more in the "know". Unfortunately most can achieve that by using the forum and by going on irc. As a first term congress member as well the start of your article was similar to my experience, being solicited by SoH candidates.. Just like ppl can tune into c-span and watch congress, ppl just dont. But the questions you pose are good ones, and do garner interest.
