Open Your Eyes

Solidarity.

A unity based on a community of interests, objectives and standards.

Most days, I would not say we are in solidarity. Various petty things tear us apart. We become distracted. Distracted from what should bind us. What should bring us together.

What are we distracted from? What is it that should bind us together?

Canada. The success and prosperity of Canada.

We need not get caught up in the petty national infighting and political squabbles between parties. This is not to say that I haven’t been caught up in the politics and infighting. However I know this all tears us apart. How are we to see the merit of the ideas and proposals of others when we ourselves are blinded to the opportunities they may contain? We are blinded by the party with which we and they identify.

Open your eyes.

Look past party lines and see the opportunities that lie ahead when we work together. When we try to vie for our party and gain advantages for just our party, we stall and become inefficient.

Case in point: A Congress was elected on July 25th. With each new Congress comes a new Speaker to moderate debate. Would you like to know how long it took for Congress to truly get the Speaker situation sorted out? August 14th. That’s ridiculous, unheard of even.

Open your eyes.

See past what divides us and work for a greater cause. Work not just for your party and whatever agenda it may wish to uphold, but work for Canada. The success and prosperity of Canada is the glue that binds us. It is the preeminent objective that all Canadian politicians and citizens should work for.

We know we can work together. Look at our recent war with the US or even our war with Poland. Whenever something like that happens, we come together. In a remarkable display of solidarity, we are bound together by the common bond of Canada. In these moments, we find ourselves striving for the betterment and advancement of Canada. When we all come together, Canada has some great moments. So why can’t this happen in politics?

We need not be constrained by our parties. We need not fear to reach across the aisle and step out of our comfort zone. Don’t dismiss the ideas of others and cling tightly to your own. Find the common ground, find compromise, find cooperation. Don’t be blinded by the party lines, the quarreling and drama.

Open your eyes.
