Congressional Update: War and Taxes
Derphoof
Why hello, I didn’t see you there. While I have your attention, let me inform you about the actions Congress has taken in the past week or so.
WAR!
So basically Jacobi was in the process of negotiating a Training War with the eUK. The UK CP said no. However congress exerted its power and declared the UK as our NE anyways. Jacobi told Congress to vote no, but his orders were rejected. He also told MU’s not to set the DO’s for attacks on UK soil lest the government rescind funding. Today Poland is voting us as their NE. As a result we will not have the bonus when fighting our legitimate war against Poland because we are unable to propose another NE until about 4 days from now. So if you wanted war, you’ve got it! On two fronts!
Taxes!
In order to do something with our economy, changes in tax law have been proposed. The proposed changes would bring Income tax down to 5%, the VAT on weapons to 3%, and import tax raised to 2%. Two proposals were voted down calling for the VAT (previously 0
😵and import taxes (previously 99
😵on Raw Materials to be lowered to 0% and 1% respectively.
More random votes!
The speaker drama has come to a close. The new Speaker is Wilhelm Gunter and it took 4 different votes to get us to this point.
Comments
I might as well chime in politely before the stronger voices cut in with their corrections:
Congress found out about the Training War after the NE was proposed. I'm not sure it was vote up as a way to go ahead with the TW as previously planned. People just wanted WAR regardless of whatever reason and UK is always chosen as the default target.
While I did vote "no" to the NE against the UK, the 10% NE bonus we could have had against Poland will do us little good. We have 1620 active citizens (#34 in the eWorld); they have 10493 (#6 in the eWorld). Against an enemy so overwhelming, it's a token measure.
As usual, and normal for a #34 ranked nation, we will be depending on our allies for support. The question is, do we have any military/political capital left to get our allies to fight for us, when we have acted so badly in the recent past?
As for the NE 10% bonus: It still feels good to be more prepared and better organized as a team when a real battle arrives. It's a blow to morale more than anything to do with actual numbers...but people would still like to get a 10% addition to rank points and TP, I suppose.
We will still get our True Patriot gold; that comes from fighting for eCanada, whether or not there is an NE.
~hyuu~
Is it just me or do you see a hidden LSR message? ;P
On to more meaningful discussions:
War is a driving factor for an increase in short term in-game activity. In a war that places eCanada on the front lines, citizens feel an obligation to protect their homeland at all costs. The media booms around war. Salutes occur left and right. Heroes are named, battles are remembered. All in the glory of a front-line war.
Taxes, politics, and the economy are examples of long term factors that the common citizen would stick through. With the exception of a political scandal, not much will change their view of our society and their activity.
eCanada has no chance against Poland without allied support. With Rylde's international dealings from his administration he was respected in Terra, perhaps we still have some of his respect upon us and won't have to build from the ashes.
Terra is ashes.
Someone once said ashes makes for fertile ground but that's a long season of growing and we're facing an ass-reaping harvest before month's end.
