Analysis of Resources

Day 1,711, 15:35 Published in USA USA by highflyer35

I have compared the resources controlled by the eUSA and their real life counterparts. The eUSA has 51 original territories including the 50 states plus the District of Columbia. For being a very rich in natural resources in real life, the eUSA is limited to only five basic resources in this game.

This leaves the US without five resources: fish, deer, iron, saltpeter, and rubber. I know this is only a game and we can not expect it to list every resource that mother nature has to offer, but some of these resources already incorporated into the game are more than abundant in real life USA.

Fish

The US is the 5th largest harvester of fish in the world, harvesting over 5 million tonnes of fish each year. The leading U.S. fishing ports are Dutch Harbor, AK, and New Bedford, MA. Now Alaska's resource in the game is oil which makes sense, however Massachusetts resource is aluminum which I could not find any reference to an aluminum mine anywhere in Massachusetts. While one of its most important resources is fish, and it is widely known for its fishing industry. Some of the most important species being dogfish, flounder, lobster, and haddock. In 2010 the New Bedford port alone landed over 133,000,000 pounds of seafood worth over $306,000,000. The next top three Massachusetts ports landed 115,000,000 pounds worth $91,600,000. Why the eUS does not benefit from this resource so essential in real life, is beyond me.

Deer

This was a kind of difficult resource to analyse. Wild deer can be found in every state, however no state harvests enough deer each year to warrant it being the natural resource for the territory. So I’ll have to agree with Plato on this one.

Iron

The U.S. is the 7th largest producer of iron ore in the World, behind China, Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, Ukraine, and South Africa in that order. Out of the top 10 leading iron ore producers, The U.S., Australia, Iran, and South Africa are all without a territory that produces iron. In the U.S. Minnesota is the state that produces the most ore. But in the game Minnesota’s resource is grain. Despite grain being a chief resource to real life Minnesota, leaving an industrial giant, no matter how much industry is sent off shores, without a source of iron is illogical.

Saltpeter

I did not know much about saltpeter reserves so I had to do some research on this. The first thing I learned is one does not mine for saltpeter they mine for potash which is a salt that can be refined to saltpeter. The largest deposits of potash are located in Canada, Brazil, Belarus, Germany, Russia, and New Mexico. New Mexico contains the most pure reserves in the world with up to 80% saltpeter. However Canada is still the largest producer of saltpeter. In this game, none of these countries have any territories with saltpeter. New Mexico’s resource in the game is cattle, which is a valuable resource to the state in real life, however the eUS would benefit greatly from having saltpeter.

Rubber

There are two types of rubber, natural and synthetic. Synthetic oil is made from petroleum products and can be manufactured all over the world. Natural rubber is made from rubber latex which comes from rubber trees. Rubber trees were originally native to South America, however they were spread by European explorers to be found in tropical regions all around the world. Since the majority of the United States is not a tropical region rubber is not a huge natural resource and therefore I agree with Plato in not giving the eUSA rubber.

Despite these setbacks the eUSA has done a great job securing all of these resources abroad with its holdings in

Mexico

Europe

Canada

All of these resources are reasonable for the geography, climate, and geology of the territories.

I know I shouldn't be complaining we have so many resources as it is and the 100% bonus really helps our economy but I would like to see the eUSA benefit as much from geographical diversity as the real USA does.
