"The United Netherlands", a part of history worth remembering.

Before i start my article i would like to use this intro to thank everyone who has helped me on my way and supported me while i walked my first steps in this strange new world. I would also like to thank all the people who endorsed, voted or subscibed to my previous article. Because of your kind welcoming words (and deeds) i found the energy to start on my second article. I was thinking about a topic to write about and as i'm not yet fully "up-to-date" on the eBelgian political scene i decided to start out with a historal article. It took me quite some time to find the right subject to write about but after some crawling through the many pages of the erepublik history i found a very interesting topic: "The United Netherlands". This introduction to my article has become much longer as i originally planned so i'm going to stop wasting your time and start the article. Enjoy!

General information about the United Netherlands:

The United Netherlands was a union between eBelgium and the eNetherlands. It's regions consisted of all eBelgian and eDutch territories combinded. The Western Netherlands was the official capital of the UNL and it was (together with Wallonia) the most populated region. The officially accepted currency in the UNL was the NLG (Dutch Guilder). English was the main language of the union but dutch and french where commonly spoken too. The UNL had it's own flag which was a combination of both the Belgian flag and the Dutch flag as too symbolise harmonie between the two nations. The union officially started on the 5th of April 2009 and unofficially ended in February 2010. However the eNetherlands decided to officially keep the name (the United Netherlands) for another six months.

The origins of the United Netherlands:

The reason for the merger was mainly a PTO-threat from an eSpanish group who called themselves "Las tropas imperiales". Twelve days before the merger with the Netherlands (the 25th of March) they managed to gain a majority in the eBelgian congress resulting in a succesfull PTO. However on the 5th of April the eBelgian president CreveRoeland decided to "give away" all the eBelgian territories to prevent the PTO-group from getting the presidential seet. The eBelgian territories where taken over by the eDutch in a single day. The merger was a succes. There was a great amount of support from both eBelgium and the eNetherlands and the Peace Global Community immediatly supported the union. A small amount of eBelgians decided to move to the eUnited Kingdom but besides that the union went very smooth and was generally considered a great succes!

Millitary campaigns

In it's ten months of existance the UNL had rather few conflicts. Ofcourse, at first there where "the unification wars" consisting of three battles over respectively Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. These three battles all took place on the same day, April 5th 2009. The second conflict was called "Operation Belgian Waffle". This was a conflict where two resistance wars started in Brussels and Wallonia by American soldiers. They claimed that their intention was to "liberate" eBelgium from the eDutch oppressors. Both eBelgian and eDutch citizens fought side by side to counter the attack from the eUSA and they succeded. The intentions behind this attack are not known to the general public to this day. After this came a resistance war in Brussels by a player called "sikkie" on June 24 2009. It got very little to no support and therefore it failed and never made a significant impact on the union. The last conflict the union had recieved the name "Operation Waffle". On October 23, 2009 an eRomanian group called "The Group" leaded by andyr started a resistance war in eFlanders. They quickly gained support from the eAmerican military group "SEAL team six" and other forces from the "EDEN" alliance. They won the battle and "The Group" managed to win the congress elections of October with a six to four majority. A couple of days later on November 5th "Operation Waffle" continued and they managed to conquer eBrussels. The United Netherlands defended eWallonia succesfully so many eBelgians moved there to remain part of the UNL. Not long after that Wallonia fell too and that meant the unofficial end of the union.

Political scene

The first official president of the United Netherlans was a player called Dionysus from the Iron & Wine party (a very popular eDutch party back then). Dionysus was president of the UNL from March 2009 untill June 2009. He reigned over the UNL for quite some time making him the longest consecutive reigning president. His successor was Jazar, another party member of Iron & Wine. He only ruled one term. In July 2009 the first real life Belgian became president, ThomasRed from the Belgian Party (BP). Not only was he the first real life Belgian to become president of the UNL but he was also the president that reigned during the most terms. ThomasRed was in office for a total of 5 terms and 2 half-terms. The first time he got elected into office he stayed there for three consecutive months (07/2009-10/2009). In October that year the people of the United Netherlands voted for another player to become CP. They chose ArtemIvanov from the Libertarian Social Democrats (LSD). However, ArtemIvanov resigned his position halfway his term and ThomasRed got appointed as the "new" president. When the term ended he decided to run for president again and ThomasRed managed to stay in office for another two and a half months (from december untill february). He resigned near the end of his last term as president and DanielB1989 took up the job as CP of the UNL. The three parties that delivered all the presidents (BP, I&W and LSD) where also the three most influential parties. There was one other party that could be seen as part of the "main parties" and that are the Green Liberal Democrats (GLD). They rose to power mainly during the last months of the union and perhaps therefore they weren't able to deliver a president for the UNL. The last piece i would like to write on this topic is about an interesting ambassador system the UNL had. The United Netherlands divided the eWorld in 9 different regions with each an ambassador. These regions where: the Americas, Western Europe, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, Balkan, Middle East, Orient and South-East Asia & Oceania. Each ambassador would be responsible for keeping good connections with the region they where "responsible" for.

I hope you enjoyed reading my first real article and i'll write a couple more in the coming days (or week). If you have questions or remarks about the article i'll gladly hear them so please send me a private message or post a reply on this article if you have any. If there are people who want to know more about the subject i will write one or several articles that go further in depth of one or certain aspects of this very interesting period in eBelgian history.
