[RL IRE] Same-Sex Marriage Referendum!

Hey guys,
This is just a message about what's happening in RL Ireland right now!
We have a same-sex marriage referendum coming up on May 22nd!
It is so important that this vote passes. Well it's important to myself and many other LGBTQ+ people in Ireland. I have yet to see a relevant argument for the "No" campaign.
If it doesn't pass this time around, I don't believe there will be another same-sex marriage referendum in Ireland in my lifetime, unfortunately. Hopefully I'm wrong in saying that.
I don't see how this referendum passing would affect anyone that is straight in a harmful way.
Because it doesn't.
The only people this referendum passing would affect is the LGBTQ+ community.
Vote yes, and help make the LGBTQ+ community better, happier, and equal.
Give us the right to marry. Give us equality.
Civil Partnership doesn't have all the same laws as Marriage does, obviously. So for same-sex couples it's not great. Unfortunately a lot of people are unaware of the differences between a Civil Partnership and a Marriage.
There are over 160 legal differences between marriage as defined in Irish law and civil partnerships as defined in Irish law.
The differences are outlined here:
Missing Pieces
This is an extract from Get Informed -
"Some people may ask what the difference between civil partnership and civil marriage is. Others may believe that civil partnerships are the same as marriage, but using a slightly different term. And still others may feel that same sex couples should be happy to have their relationships recognised and validated by the State, even if it is not through civil marriage.
The fact is, loving, committed relationships between two consenting adults should be treated equally, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Same sex couples should be allowed to share the same responsibilities, obligations and respect that marriage provides.
It makes no sense to exclude loving couples already doing the work of marriage in their daily lives – supporting one another, raising families, etc – from the legal structure intended to reinforce that dedication, those meanings, and – at its heart – commitment and love."
Yes those posters are really up around Ireland.
But thankfully, the Yes posters have finally started going up since Saturday.
This one means "Our day will come"
I really hope and encourage any/all of the RL Irish people on here, to vote yes. And I hope that you are all registered!
You have until May 5th to register to vote, so if you're not, please do!
On May 22nd, we are voting on whether “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex", nothing to do with children.
Children can ALREADY legally be raised and/or adopted by same-sex parents.
The NO campaign is essentially relying on irrelevant emotional blackmail. That law passed a few weeks ago, so please just forget about the children here. The referendum is about Same-sex Marriage.
In fact, allowing same-sex civil partnerships to become marriages will offer further rights and protection to children adopted into these families, so just think about what's ACTUALLY the better vote for the children; if they're really your main concern.
Just a friendly reminder that marriage is not the same as holy matrimony and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with religion.
Open your minds and use your brains people. Get out and vote yes on May 22nd.
"For anyone who believes our referendum should not be passed on a religious basis, I direct you MY COMMENTS (AoifeNiBhriain) on RTK's article:
RTK's Article
You may find something new out."
I would like to also apologise for my comment here : "I don't see why anyone would vote no for this referendum, unless they're just narrow minded and/or homophobic or uneducated in the matter." I have since removed it from above and replaced it with "I have yet to see a relevant argument from the "No" campaign."
The only reason I said what I said was because I believe that that's who the no voters are. Narrow minded in the sense that they don't want to see anything but a man and woman together. Homophobic in the sense that they think two people of the same sex are disgusting. Uneducated in the matter because they don't really understand the difference between a marriage and a civil partnership, and they think this involves children.
So I'm sorry if you got hurt by what I said, but those "Vote No" posters hurt me, and I have to walk around my town(and anywhere else in Ireland) and see them on every other lamp post, telling me that I shouldn't be allowed to have the same rights as most of my friends in marrying the person they love if they want to, I wouldn't even have the choice. That hurts me.
I know I shouldn't have done the whole "They did it first" thing, but I just got worked up and let it show.
Ireland's time has come to move forward in a positive way.
Make your vote count on May 22nd.
Show your support by shouting, commenting, and voting!
In honour of this law, let me know in the comments who has had same-sex eMarriages and who you are or were eMarried to!

says it all..
remind me to change the law to remove children from the remaining parent in event one dies. Total BS argument. Children deserve loving parent(s)
True that!
[removed]
Actually you are wrong they are not "Most likely become gay too "
They might not grow with stone age views and actually understand how complex our world and human relationships are.
Who are the parents of the gay people around now?.... answer = straight parents! Doh! qed
Oh wow, Vlado really?
Child of an LGBT parents will probably become the same? No, they'll be born whatever way they're born and love who ever they love. I am a child of a straight couple and I'm gay? As are many other gay people.
I for one wouldn't care if my child did tell me they are gay, I would support them, and they could still have children, there are many ways now.
Why wouldn't any of the people who support Same-sex Marriage be happy about having a gay child? Your love for your child is unconditional, and you should be proud of them no matter who they love. They can reproduce, they can get a donor, surrogacy, IVF, adopt? Many many ways.
Vlado thats like saying if you grow up with deaf parents you will be deaf too.
Wait... are you for the Vote No campaign?
im not pro any campaign
But you just made a comment with the picture attached that says "Children deserve a mother and a father, vote no" and "says it all.." so are you saying you agree with the poster or disagree?
I have nothing against lbgt people though
Let me say what you actually mean.... "I have nothing against lbgt people though but I want the right to discriminate against them"
But what about the children of single parents? Can't the child have 2 mothers, or 2 fathers? It doesn't have to be a mother and father. Like children grow up well with just one mother or just one father. Do you understand?
But my point is that this referendum has nothing to do with children. There is already a law in Ireland saying that a same-sex couple can adopt, which came in a couple of weeks ago.
This referendum is just so same-sex couples can marry the person they love. And have the same rights as any other heterosexual couple.

I lold @ Vlado's argument. By his wishing well logic if you hang around with people who are black you'll turn into one. xD
It's a rare occasion Hank and myself agree
good thing I left your MU, you are loco!
i kicked u out bastard
cause you are so loco, I could come back anytime as is. There is a reason I dont though, I dont like being around small minded people. Ya dig 😉
I am fully behind the Yes campaign Tara and will vote Yes on May 22nd. As will my wife siblings nieces, nephews and my 85 year old mother.
I have yet to hear one good reason why anyone should vote No only a lot of hate disguised as concern for children. This from a church that sold children and abused children in our recent past. They could be honest and say it is because they are homophobic...I would have a "little" more respect.
Time to bin this mindset and drive the progressive agenda forward to make our country a modern country with 21st century values.
I am really hopeful this will pass but you know what referendum votes are like...unpredictable.
Exactly Winston, and I appreciate that.
The No campaign is just ridiculous, giving out misinformation to try and get some people to swing towards the no vote. While also discriminating against a whole wide range of people so it's actually aiming to be counter-productive and helping the yes vote.
That's true about it being unpredictable, so many people are thinking that the yes vote will pass easily so a lot of them won't bother voting. And so many young people aren't even registered to vote yet, sadly.
Let's hope we can make history in our lifetime and get this vote passed! 🙂
'Tis the problem with being in any religion-run country. Religion is rarely progressive and when it has a big say in politics, change happens too slowly. One thing about the UK is church influence is curtailed, so things move that little bit more quickly (unless the Tories are in charge).
I would say the the church's influence in Ireland is on the way out. Most people could not give a toss about god or religion. It has no input in their lives. The official society is catching up...slowly.
Voted. I hope Ireland passes a yes vote. If marriage is going to exist then it needs to be equal.
And there is one way that it effects straight people - if Ireland gets caught behind then who's to say that a lot of talented people aren't going to leave the country to be recognized as equal? I would.
My sister already has.
Would vote yes if i were in Ireland xD
Regardless of the outcome, by the end of our lives it'll be legal in almost every nation. There's nothing progressive that ignorant and hate-filled neo-conservatives can prevent no matter their efforts.
Of course if it were up to me I'd abolish marriage and replace it with something entirely free of religious ties and history, which would be open to all persons.
superVote.
