Hmmm, if we are talking about fiction:
Three Men in a Boat, Jerome K. Jerome (the epitome of British humour)
Edgar Allan Poe, given the fact he wrote a plethora of short stories, it is difficult to single out something in particular; however it is fascinating how he managed to excel in almost every genre and being a pioneer in some of them
Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Mark Twain (I adore Samuel Clemens's skill at presenting difficult moral dilemmas, social and political issues in a joyful satirical manner)
The Good Soldier Švejk, Jaroslav Hašek (I love trickster characters, who somehow manage to weasel their way out of stickiest situations in the most ridiculous manner possible)
The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel , Charles de Coster
If I have to mention something more boring:
Why nations fail, Daron Acemoglu - should be mandatory to read in high schools
The World as Will and Representation, Arthur Schopenhauer - One thing I like about A.Sch. (apart from his ideas) is that his philosophical texts are written like actual scientific works, cutting unnecessary diarrhoea verborum some other philosophers are guilty of
It was mentioned here, and I shall reiterate it - the Holy Bible - even if a person is not religious, it is useful to read at least as a database of possibly useful advice(not only in a spiritual sense) and a showcase of human behaviour in different situations (who people are more likely to follow, who people typically value, etc.)
You are wise person.
