Theme: Inaction against Tyranny

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee"

- John Donne, from ”Devotions upon Emergent Occasions”, known primarily nowadays as the source of the title of Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls”

"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

- Martin Niemöller, a famous and powerful quotation from a German pastor regarding how the inaction, apathy and reluctance of German society helped the rise of Nazi persecution.

"Silent acquiescence in the face of tyranny is no better than outright agreement."

- C.J. Redwine

"When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

- Edmund Burke, the actual quote that is probably why the classic “all that is necessary for the triump of evil...” quote that is often attributed to Burke

"He is a good man but he does nothing. His inaction is often the handmaid of evil."

- O.C. Fisher, as far as I can tell, referring to the author William Saroyan
