A Call for Calm

Day 5,816, 15:42 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by 10 Downing Street

Fellow citizens

In the last 48 hours we saw some extraordinary scenes in the Congress thread and Country feed stemming from a disputed election for Speaker of Congress. The dispute escalated throughout the next day. Now that everyone has had the chance to sleep on things, I am calling for calm and a restoration of dignified proceedings in Congress and elsewhere.

I am not blameless in this myself, as I muddied the waters in the Congress discussions about the closing time for the Speaker vote. I also drafted this article yesterday and perhaps should have published it immediately, instead of hoping that things would simply settle.

No matter what was said before or since, one of the candidates for the position conceded the election at one point and as Country President, I acted on that and acknowledged it, congratulating Mr Woldy on his election and formally communicating with him in keeping with my earlier commitment to do so.

Following this, things got rather confused and intemperate in the Congress thread, for reasons not entirely clear to all observers.

As Country President, I vote in-game on Congress law proposals and the same should apply in Congress votes on issues that are to be subsequently resolved by in-game voting. I now accept that this does not extend to purely internal questions in Congress, such as its internal appointments.

With regard to the appointment of a Speaker, it is my opinion that this should be decided as the first act of any new Congress, with the outgoing Speaker in charge of the proceedings, specifying the voting process and precise closing time for the vote. However, formulating this process is a matter to be decided by Congress alone.

In the circumstances, I recommend that the be no further change or action until a new election is called under procedures to be decided by Congress.

I also call upon all parties in Congress, whether supporters of the elected Speaker, or members and supporters of the government, to terminate the existing disputation and focus on matters of national importance.

We must remember that one party, or opponents of a party, do not represent the national polity on their own account. It is the same with the non-political elements of our community, such as the strong military players and the large business owners. Each of them contribute to the national welfare; the fighters militarily and the business owners economically. All politically active players also contribute to the national good with their participation in the political module. All military and business activity generates tax revenue for the country, to be distributed by those in the political module who provide the leadership and decision-making without which nothing could be managed. It must also be remembered that our national tanks cooperate with other citizens by their forbearance in the medal runs that are protected and rewarded by government programs for less powerful players.

Thank you for your time.
