What if: Churchill NOT became Prime Minister in 1940?

May 1940:

Norwegian campaign 1940 was near an conclusion, British forces in Norway was in retreat and a defeat looks unavoidable. The Norway debate in the House of commons on May 7th and 8th, gave a harsh critisizm towards Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, not only from the Opposition, but even from his own Conservative MP`s. It seemed to be obvious his days as British PM was counted. The question was: whom to succeed him? Two alternatives was on table, First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Sir Winston Churchill and Minister of Foreign Affairs (MoFa), Lord Halifax.

Trough the 1930ies those two men did have different standings towards the appeasement politics toward Nazi-Germany. Churchill strongly against, and Lord Halifax a pragmatic supporter. Internal discussions was ongoing inside the Conservative Party, and after heated negotiations between the two candidates it all ended with The Rt. Hon. Lord Halifax becoming the new Prime Minister and Sir Winston Churchhill, for a while, did continue as First Lord.

Prime Minister Halifax`s First Speech in the House, was in aftermath considered as uninspired and characterized by defeatism because of even more gains of German forces in France. The disagreements between The Prime Minister and Churchill was insolvable, and, after the humiliating annihilation of the British forces on the beaches of Dunkirk, the latter resigned his post, and went in the shadows of history. The British Government did not see other alternatives than accepting an proposed armistice deal of 1940, ending which since have been known as “The Channel War”. Halifax`s most famous words, and legacy, was his radio speech on BBC, the September 21th 1940:

“We can fight on the beaches, we can fight in the fields, but to what cost will it be? We can fight in the streets and in the hills, but whom, who still do remember the views of Verdun and Passchendaele, can disagree that would be a tremendous cost, once again! This is NOT a surrender, it`s a respect and obligation towards our still living previous "Great War" generation, in addition to the current and future generations to avoid such evil horrors as we saw in the years of 1914-18.”

The fate of France was hardly mentioned in speech. Either was The King, which fierce stance against the armistice deal, forced His Majesty to draw a conclusion…..

Prime Minister Halifax never get momentum and initiative after the Armistice. Election was needed to be held latest in autuum 1940. The Conservatives was divided in the issue of armistice, and in the November election it fragmented in two fractions, for and against continuing war. Earlier in the 1930ties Labour and Liberals had been fragmented in different parties too, and the election of 1940 ended the old traditional two party system and transformed it to multi party system, giving no sole plurality in House in decades to come. Eternal political instability and weak minority Governments was unfitted to solve the even more challenging social and economical problems. The Demand for a Strong Leader become louder and louder……….

Near fifty years after The Armistice………
Excerpt from the diary of His Majesty King Richard IV of Great Britain and Commonwealth:
Date: 1989-11-09:

Dear Diary!
Opened the Parliament today, wonder why I`m doing this? It`s all staffage and theatre, initiated from the English need for pomp, circumstance and tradition. Tradition tell us “the power” is in this House, but we all know the real power is in hands far outside from there, even outside the Nation in my opinion. The last election this autumn was a farce, as usual. The New Conservative Party lost again, as they do in elections every time, towards Union Movement. Puppets, I call them! If the unlikely happened, and the NCP should win an election and achieve some influence…..

Ohh stop the speculations, Your Majesty!!!!! We all know that wouldn`t be allowed!

Remember what happened with Labour Party after the election and the following Nothing Hills Uprising in 1958, where hundreds, perhaps thousands of our people were killed! Does anyone know the excact numbers of fatalities? Maybe the Intelligence, but I`m not sure they either know, they probably never counted all the dead bodies afterwards! I do remember my father, the late HM King Henry IX, sadness` those days! I know he was thinking of abdication then, but I fully do understand he couldn`t do the same as his two older brothers did; HM king Edward VIII in 1936, because of that woman, and HM King George VI in 1940, after the Defeat. That would ended our Dynasty, and perhaps even a thousand year old tradition of Monarchy. The bitter pill for my father was to accept The National Protection Act of 1959, forbidding most of the parties on the leftern side, the “communist parties” as they were called, leaving the real power to Mosley and his successors in the UM.

Speaking about Mosley, tomorrow I`ll meet my son, The Prince of Wales on Sir Oswald Mosley International Airport, when The Prince will arrive home from his first year on Dr. Goebbels University in Berlin. It`s not my choice and will, to give my oldest son his education in such a place, but as future King, it`s expected, in the sake of “good relations” between our countries. And I have to admit I`m curious to know how he do concider the situation there, from inside, since I don’t trust to much our own Intelligence reports. I do receive some letters, now and then, from my cousin, former Princess Elizabeth from her “exile” in USA, but because of the censorship it don’t tells me much (strange to think of – she would been our Queen by now, if her father, and my uncle, didn`t abdicate then on behalf of him self and his family). With my son I can do hope for some trusted information, from under the surface. But because of our own personal security it`s not safe to indicate it to openly. As my dear father always reminded me on; “Be careful son, “Cromvell`s are everywhere, remember the fate of King Charles I and the Tsar!”

As far as I know, the political situation in Germany has been stabilized the last years, but for how long will it last this time? After Der Fuhrer`s resignation and death in 1964, it has been too much uncertainities and struggle for power between all the fractions inside Their Party. Looking from outside everything seems calm and steady, but it is a sign, since none of the successors has had the strength to achieve the title “Der Fuhrer” again. And I`m sure the Germans don’t tell us the whole truth about “The Troubles” they do have towards The Russian States. I`m afraid the German problems will drain away the resources we do need from them, concerning our own security challenges around in the Commonwealth. India was a great loss for us, also was Ulster, we can`t afford losing anything more now….

My dear Diary, it`s late, I`ve to go to bed now, but I can`t stop thinking, what if things were done in a different way back in 1940? What if……….?”
