THE DUBLIN COMMUNE

Day 3,203, 16:23 Published in Ireland Ireland by Sweet Drinker

eRep is a funny old game and if you’re a local, it’s probably as weird to be reading my tribute to MikeBane as it is to write it. But here we are!

Mike wasn’t someone I ever really worked with. Frankly I don’t think Mike ever did any honest work in erep. He was usually aligned against me politically, and accused me of absurd misconducts. Sometimes I’d honestly have to Wiki the things we’d been called.

I suspect Mike would have taken any opportunity he could get to “beat me” in eIreland. He once started a thread ILP’s private forum hatching a longplay plan to infiltrate my Ministry (finance) and eventually depose me! I have a lot of legit reasons to dislike MikeBane tbh.

But somehow it just worked.
While other players would meet fierce rebuttal to any accusations they might make, Mike could basically say or do anything he wanted because he overshot the mark so high! ILP likes to demonise its rivals, but Mike’s outlandish articles and behaviour became endearing to its targets as often as not. He seldom did any real harm, and never had any ill-intent. To the players who routinely had to shoot down his starry-eyed ideals, Mike’s only crime was attempting to fly before crawling, often seemingly in a spaceship to another galaxy…
MikeBane had the big ambitions of someone who is unaware of the impracticality of achieving them. So it shouldn’t be surprising that nobody ever lived up to his expectations. But hey there’s no harm in asking right?

Ultimately Mike wanted to help “the people rise up”. Erep is commonly categorized in 3 modules: military, industrial, and political. I think in the end Mike saw a class struggle in eIreland, with many of the Political Class showing a white-collar disdain for the blue collared Military & Industrial Classes, and so lead a campaign to put the common players’ destiny into their own hands. We all know Mike didn’t support our Military Dictatorship out of a hate for democracy, but rather saw it as the birth of a kind of Labour Union.

I like to think that, despite being one of the “capitalist-vampire/fascist-monster/jellyfish-conspirators” of Mike’s articles, I’ve participated in some of eIreland’s best attempts change our community’s fortunes. Today I’m lucky enough to speak about our attempt to salvage a little more of Mike’s dream from the shell of a battle simulator this game has become. Ofc, it’s not everything MikeBane envisioned, just the best we can offer within current game mechanics.

The Dublin Commune:
The current administration and counsellors are selecting members, from all walks of eIrish life, for a new government thread. Congress as an institution has continually failed eIreland because it invariably devolved into a personal/political battleground rather than a device for cooperating on behalf of the community. That is what a government is supposed to be and that is what we hope to achieve in The Dublin Commune; a device for eIrish players to cooperate with.

Membership is limited to a single ingame thread. We are prioritizing active players, but of all backgrounds. This will be the place for discussing ideas/concerns for the nation rather like a Senate.
Holding a place on The Dublin Commune is earned by demonstrating the ability to remain civil and a team-player even when in dispute with other members of the commune. Tell the administration we’re stupid/doing everything wrong/killing Plato/Sluagh-raided-your-potato-patch: Fine. But behaviour obviously intended to scupper cooperation of the commune itself will quickly have players removed. Nobody is entitled to be there. We’d really like to populate the thread with eIrish players who don’t need to have the difference between discourse and disruption explained to them

If you are a reasonably active, civil, civic minded eIrish player looking to participate in eIrish National Government The Dublin Commune is for you. You’re not required to do anything as a member, but most government staffing is likely to come from the Commune’s membership. We’re encouraging players who tend to disagree with the current administration as much as those who mainly support us, as long as everyone can do so in a constructive manner. Don’s Airstrikes and my Investments get shot down too, we all have to accept disappointment in this world..
The eIrish Military Dictatorship is not stepping down. I’m sure some will complain the The Dublin Commune Members are still facing a central oligarchy deliberating verdicts on their ideas or complaints. It’s true. Department heads need to have final say on whether they are even capable of fulfilling a request. You can’t simply command engineers to stop a bridge from collapsing during a flood to make it so.. eIreland’s various decisions need to be grounded in a longterm strategy. Or the only thing we’ll be talking about is “whose fault is this…” again.

tldr; If you’d like to participate in governing the country (but don’t know what to do cause it’s not a traditional government) then come join The Dublin Commune! If you despise the current administration and vow never work with us, This should adequately facilitate your need also.
