[AMP]Forum Migration Overview

Day 1,918, 15:24 Published in USA USA by blondeninja

Today is an AMP version, where I discuss the forum migration AMP is going through, please read, vote, and subscribe!

The American Military Party has always been a very active and together party ever since it’s historic founding in 2011. It’s internal activity has been centralized across the AMP forum threads for as long as it has been in existence. Originally we were based from the eusmil forums as a subsection of the main board. After approximately 4 months the migration commenced to the currently standing Zetaboard service. As Dr Luis Sentieiro, our elected Party President for the month of February is officially sworn in he has proposed a 2nd migration of our forum to a new service and private domain. Enter you, the loyal AMP member, this decision will not be made without your valuable input. We had 3 options, each with it’s own advantages and disadvantages, and after much discussion the majority of the votes were for the moving of the forum from zetaboards to MyBB. I will do my best to explain the move and merge without any technical terms.

The Initial Configuration:

The first step is to configure the new forums. We will start by paying for a domain name. A domain name is basically the “url” of a site. For example the domain name of google is “google.com” so our name will be something like “AMPForums.com” or some derivative. Once we buy that name we will pay for hosting service. Hosting service is the resources one needs to host a website for people to access. It is equivalent to paying for a wall, and a space on that wall to put a poster for people to see. Using the same poster analogy we will then put the MyBB ‘poster’ on the ‘wall’ or in this case the MyBB website/forum on the web. The actual loading is a bit complicated because MyBB is a developers forum, however the end result is many more features. Once we load MyBB and configure it properly we will move on the the next step.

Zetaboards loading and data copying:

The data from out Zetaboards forum MAY be able to be transferred over to MyBB. Now MyBB has a list of forum services you can use their merge package to automatically move over. Unfortunately Zetaboards is not on that list, so I will try to cheat the system, per se, and move our data over in a different fashion. This will require me to load the zetaboards forum to our domain name and hosting service, from there I will attempt to move our data to MyBB. If all goes well MyBB will contain some of our old forum data. If not then we will move the important threads over to preserve the history of AMP. This takes us to our last step.

Final setup and construction:

The final task is to make the forum better from the start, once we have all of it configured and running we will make it better organized, looking smoother, more powerful, all of the things we said we’d do if we moved, we’ll get those done. This will take some time, but you will be sure to see some immediate improvements as well as some more long term ones such as a PP primary poll coded from scratch to be secure, or some ‘under the hood’ improvements like speed, storage capacity and more. On top of the ideas leadership has the items that you as party members wish to see can be much more easily added by us admins.

The entire configuration process should span about 2 weeks, mainly because of some of the time we have to wait for the domain name and hosting service to sync up as well as the transfer time of Zetaboards to the domain name. It may go faster, but it should not take any longer. If you wish to donate any money to the hosting costs or domain name costs please contact John Killah, he will be arranging payment. The cost for the forums and hosting for a year is lower than the donation amount you see on the eusa forums per month. We will be sure to make the most out of the new features and tools at our fingertips.

For any lingering questions, pm me if they are technical, clarification purposes use forum or feel free to comment, I will answer promptly.
