CPM: Import Taxes on Natural Resources
Addy Lawrence
Why aren't the import taxes on raw materials that are abundant (regional productivity = high) in eCanada not 99%?
I have checked out several countries over the past several weeks and import taxes of 99% are not uncommon and I totally see the logic in doing in eCanada, here and now.
Our Canadians need jobs, good jobs, raising this tax will steer the economy in that direction.
Import taxes could also cut ties between a foreign owned firm in eCanada that is being sourced from their homeland, stamp this out.
For value added goods, I think the import tax should be zero so that the eCanada value chain is as EFFICIENT as possible and that raw material companies don't gouge.

There's nothing wrong with foreign investment as long as its controlled. Having import taxes at 99% is pretty ridiculous.
There is really no need for us to entirely shut out foreign competition. It helps keep our prices in line, and anyone we're at war with is unable to sell in Canada, so the only foreign competition are our allies.

I advocate free trade on value added goods, this will by default keep the raw material industry competitive. Nobody should be buying grain, wood nor oil from a foreign owned company.
I agree Addy, but is it possible for Canadian based companies to be owned by foreigners? I seem to come across "Canadian" companies who seem to be owned by Eurpeans and Americans for example. This would seem to still be supporting foreign companies with respect to raw material.
