Blame It On The New Rules

Allow me to layout two basic foundations for the rest of this article. One is simply empirical and can not be argued with, the other is a normative statement in the fact that it can not be tested or shown through figures but I’ll try to prove it anyway.

The first foundation is that EDEN is a stronger alliance, in terms so of GOLD, population and military damage, then Phoenix. This is a fact that can be checked through a number of means, though I recommend reading Bogdan_L’s paper From The Shelf.

The second foundation is that Phoenix HQ is smarter then EDEN HQ. This obviously can not be proven through figures but I need only point to the poor communication that lead to the USA/EDEN stand off several months ago, the poor planning that lead to Croatia getting wiped, the failed Croatia to Asia land bridge and I need only simply mention the words World In Flames to really drive home my point. Opposed to this we see the detailed and long term planning that lead to Serbia getting into Malaysia, the South African PTO and the long term propaganda effort that cost the USA their High Iron region.

For a very long time these two powers have faced off against each other, their different strengths adding to the dynamics of the struggle and making the game enjoyable for everyone. Neither side ever managed to gain the definitive upper hand and they were fairly even matched.

With the introduction of the new MPP rules, we have seen a massive shift in the balance of power. The brute force of EDEN can now be brought to bear with very little effort at strategy and we have seen the recent effects of this in Europe where Phoenix is on the run on most fronts. The new MPP rules have shifted the balance of the game away from rewarding good strategy and long term planning to rewarding brute force and money and it is killing Phoenix.

At least, that’s what is being said by any Phoenix leader you speak to these days.

Personally, I don’t completely buy this. A fact that is conveniently overlooked most of the time by these people who have been ‘hard done by’ is that Phoenix had lost some of their most important regions (Lion King and all of Western Russia) before the new MPP rules were implemented.

The growing importance of Time Zones in battles, both in V2 and V1.5, are usually ignored but they are one of the key shapers of foreign policy at the moment. Firstly, time zones decide battles. We saw this in Russia and we saw it again in LK. Phoenix woefully ignored this prior to, and right after the implementation of, V2 and are paying the price for that now while EDEN anticipated this and began to build USA, China and Canada relations to the point where they are unrecognisable from relations prior to the war module change. The second effect of this has been, again, the relations. EDEN have become dependant on China and the USA in most of their battle plans and this has naturally resulted in stronger relations with the two countries. The growing support for EDEN in the USA and China’s growing strength has resulted in larger damage outputs from both countries and this has been enough to tip the scale in most battles now.

In summary, yes the new MPP rules do favour EDEN’s brute force and yes they undermine the concept of strategy but Phoenix was in decline well before they were introduced due to a variety of other factors such as the conquest of timezone warfare, the concentration of power and the tide of wars. But go ahead Phoenix, blame it on the new rules.
