I mean, he/she knew that death will come to him/her soon because as you can read on riddle he/she didn't make a hard and expensive wish yet her mother will give anything to him/her (The child didn't want to troubling his/her parents since they family was financially poor. She/he think that the gift has no matter to him/her cause she/he would die soon.)
