Governor Murphy had some nice words to say about him:

This is the first person I have known who I have heard of dying from this terrible pandemic. He was my primary physician from the time I was two until I last saw him I think when I was 26. I have been quite upset about this for several days, and just wanted to share this with you all here.

Even knowing he was putting himself at serious risk of contracting COVID, or as we should be calling it, the CCPVirus, he kept seeing patients. That's just the kind of guy Dr. Hirsch was. 🙁 We have heroes like this putting their lives on the line, and sadly often dying for it, yet there are massive amounts of inconsiderate people going out and spreading the virus and making things even worse. I just am amazed at how terrible and thoughtless people can be. He was a great man, who was always there if you needed him, even if it was outside of his office hours. He loved the Yankees, and had a great sense of humor. He was taken too soon by a terrible disease that should not even exist to begin with. Rest in Peace....

Dr. Harvey Hirsch, a beloved township pediatrician, died of COVID-19 complications Tuesday night, his employer confirmed. He was 68.

"This is so sad. He was a great man," said Mark Berkowitz, chief operating officer of the Center for Health Education, Medicine and Dentistry (CHEMED) in Lakewood.

Hirsch was in charge of pediatrics at CHEMED. On the organization's website, his profile says that he had more than "30 years of pediatric practice experience, including 12 years of private practice in Lakewood and 17 years in Manalapan."

According to his profile, Hirsch was awarded a Top Doctor Award 2011 by New Jersey Monthly Magazine and the Favorite Kids Doctor 2012 by New Jersey Family Magazine.

His death affected the community. CHEMED patient Gladis Díaz remembered how Hirsch helped her daughter even though he wasn't her daughter's main physician.

"I'm saddened because he was such a good doctor," Díaz said. "Her doctor told me he needed to bring somebody with more knowledge to look at my daughter. Doctor Hirsch came and I noticed how much he cared for his patients and loved his profession."

She added : "He was a kind man and treated us with so much care. He'll truly be missed."

His neighbor from across the street, Hershel Herskowitz, owner of Toys for Thought, said that Hirsch was a simple man who loved to help people.

"You would see people coming to his home on Friday night with their sick children and he would open his door to all of them and treat them. That's the kind of man we've lost," he said.
