Maintaining Work-Life Balance in eBelgium Pt. I

Day 5,041, 23:25 Published in Belgium Belgium by Chuck Button

Here in Wallonia there is always something to do, whether it's checking out the kids trotting around in town centre, trimming the bushes back a bit, or going for a relaxed walk down at the Vines. But today was not my day to do any of that.

I don't fancy myself a businessman, a farmer, or a businessman-farmer. I own a couple of factories here and there and make this and that, a couple of farms that are growing crops taller than your pa. And a deer ranch, Woody's Dear Deer Ranch, where the Reindeer (yes, those reindeer) hang out on summer holiday. When I started buying up these farms and factories, it go to the point where I wasn't able to work the land like I wanted to. When I was a kid I could spend sun up to sun down throwing bales of straw around like sacks of air. But being a new entrepreneur, I was finding myself stuck in the office hosting meeting after meeting, pouring over spreadsheets, and writing check after check, never seeming to know where any of the money was going or what any of this meant.

I knew this wasn't good for me or my family. And as I got older, the more I appreciated the time spent with the kids and wife, and I wanted to make sure the same thing that happened to my dad, dying at a young age of a heart attack, didn't happen to me. So I made the decision to take one day a week and work the fields or the ranch or the factory (but mainly the fields or ranch, I mean what would you do?), and not go into the office.

And boy howdy did that make a difference.

After just two weeks of this, having that one day to myself, where I was still working, but doing something I enjoyed doing, my anxiety dissipated. That sore crick in my neck went away. I was getting better quality sleep. I was simply feeling better overall. Life was worth living again.

Next time you feel you're not getting anywhere with whatever it is you think you're doing, When you think you're never going to figure it out, When it seems hopeless, do something else! Not a nap or a drink or TV. Do something that stimulates you intellectually that differs from what you usually do. Working a different area of the brain allows the part of the brain working on the original problem to shift into high gear without you getting in the way!

This can make all the difference in the world.
