Where have all the MU's gone?

A Pockmarked Retrospective
Back about day 1,000 or so military units were thick as bugs on a bumper, today there are 10 public MU's in the eUS. Something like that will make you sit up and take notice.
From the government sanctioned to the hardcore militias, the reduction in the various units is a staggering concept to take in.
What happened to them?
Without doing any real journalistic research, because let's face it, the media can't be expected to deliver anything more than speculation and innuendo these days.
I would suppose the constant occupations the eUSA suffered during my absence are the main culprits in whittling down the MUs.
The only other mechanism I am aware of that could account for this depredation is the cost of entry associated with creating and funding new units.
Either or both of these seem the logical reason there are so few MU's these days.
Is it really such a bad thing?
I guess that is up to the individual reader, some players probably thrive in the consolidated MUs that we currently have, indeed many of them probably have no idea what I'm even going on about.
However in the opinion of this word crafter I think it's a damn shame. Variety IS the spice of life, when you have more units you have more choices, and not every player is suited to the ones currently available.
Now I may be showing my old age here, but I miss that touch of the old days.... Even if I was only ever in the national guard XD.

This is officially the first classified ad in the Mississippi Mud Chronicle XD
CURRAHEE!!
CIA 4 LIFE
The price for a MU is really low now.
Cheap to create one? true.
Cheap to maintain dozens of players on campaigns? Not so much.
I have seen in shouts MU for sale at 4k. So better not create them.
Fewer players mean fewer MUs.
Fewer MUs mean better coordination, at least in theory.
MU’s really aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. I joined a few back in the day, but all they offered was all sizzle, no steak. No one would answer questions and the commanders were inactive. I made my own one person MU so I could at least have regular DO’s and I’ve been happy ever since. Totally worth the 40 gold for not having to put up with all the idiots out there who shall remain nameless
I beg to differ my brother. This nameless idiot was active af as head of the Civ MU for years. DOs were live and on time like today's news. Our MU helped noobs, answered questions, and provided shiploads of weapons and "steak" - with no government funding I might add, it was all donation-based. Honestly sorry if you missed it, I think if you ask around those citizens who were in it back then had a p good time in the Civvies.
Having run MUs big and small, I get what you're saying about the upsides of running your own one-man show, but there's a lot to be said for fighting as a team. Today it's my privilege to be a part of a great MU and I'm happier than ever. CURRAHEE!!
Yer, that's cool. Our experiences are clearly different, I was never in any MU you were in, so the ones I joined weren't that great
All bound for MU MU land

Wow you were in National Guard!
Back when it still existed, for like a couple of weeks, because shortly thereafter I moved for ATO work.

The MUs are nice if there is active leadership. When nobody is giving direction they lose their effectiveness.
You hit the nail on the head.
Oh the National Guard, now that is a long time ago.
Back in the days when there were half a dozen government sanctioned MUs, seems like another lifetime almost.
the one thing no ones pointed out i dont think and if they have my apologies.. is that you used to be able to have MU orders and earn cash for fighting for them in sanctioned wars...
which was abused of course... like everything else...
but it was a motivation for people to fight in specific wars as well.. so joining a MU that was active was a good thing to pick up some extra CC
I miss the days of the eUS Military. Thought I was never a high ranking member but it was nice having an eMilitary family. Of course I spent a good time of my old days in charge of eSingapores military and its "Elite" troops trying to fight where the eUS wanted us. That was back when there were no MU's and being a member was a spread sheet event.
Then I moved back to the eUS, fell in with the National Guard and stayed until i left the game (Shortly after the eUS Military was excommunicated).
Now I am linked up with War Inc. Found it by finding my old NG CO and asking for the lay of the land.
They must have gone to Pula
Yes, that's right, in Pula!
If the MU's were up your ass you'd know where they were.
