A Final Flourish

Day 3,490, 08:40 Published in India Croatia by Anubis.3

Another election has come and gone by. I've been named the MoE in the latest cabinet. This will be the seventh time so far.

I won't pretend that my previous terms as MoE have been spectacular. Most of them have been defined by interesting ideas, but poor or no execution. It's hard to focus and get things done in the eWorld when your real life is riddled by complications and you're beset by a serious case of writers' block. (apologies go out, in particular to Eraclev and Sidewinder for not delivering during their terms)

In a sense, the role of a MoE is among the most important for any country. It's the MoE's job to educate, and more importantly, persuade the newest players to stay on. Without a proper retention policy, your country could lose her basic identity, or at worst, become a satellite state.

But, at the same time, it is also the most underrated – in every cabinet listing, the MoE's occupant is mentioned at the bottom of the list.

That's understandable, in a way. With every passing month, there are fewer and fewer players to “educate”. The turnover rate in erepublik is remarkably high and you can never be sure if a new player will last for more than a few months and if they are worth the effort. Add to that the really short terms of the government. A president lasts for a month and then we have another one, a new MoE. The work of the old MoE fades away like a sand dune in the desert.

In all honesty, building a robust education policy is a long term thing. It's true in real-life and it's true here too.

Now, let's talk about what will happen this term. Recently, I had a conversation with BB, and he told me this (paraphrasing)

I don't care what you write about. It can be about anything, cows, atheism, whatever. Just go and put stuff out there.

Something clicked and I had an idea. Recently, a week ago I graduated and now I have quite a bit of time on my hands. The only thing about the game that interests me now is journalism. So, I made the decision to write stuff on here one last time. Then, move on to other things.

For most of my career, I've strived to be politically correct. For the uninitiated, political correctness is when you try your best not to offend any particular group of people. It often leads to stale and predictable journalism, and that's annoying for everyone.

With nothing to lose this term, I'm going to just write and write to the point and honestly about things. If you have a topic you feel gets too little attention or one that's regarded as controversial, let me know in the messages or the comments and I'll cover it.
