Prologo

Zeus, tras dejar embarazada a Alcmena, madre de Hercules, proclamó que el siguiente hijo que naciera en el seno de la casa de Perseo se convertiría en rey de Micenas. Al oír esto, la celosa Hera, esposa de Zeus, maniobró para que su odiado Hercules, que a través de Alcmena era bisnieto de Perseo, naciera con tres meses de retraso; y al mismo tiempo logró que Euristeo, primo de Alcmena y nieto paterno de Perseo, se adelantase dos meses en el parto y naciera sietemesino. Cuando Zeus advirtió lo que había sucedido, montó en cólera; pero, no obstante, mantuvo en pie su imprudente proclama, y así Euristeo fue investido rey de Micenas

Muchos años más tarde, Hera provocó en el ya adulto Hercules un ataque de locura, que le incitó a matar con sus propias manos a su mujer, a sus hijos, y a dos de sus sobrinos. Cuando recuperó la cordura y advirtió lo que había hecho, se aisló del mundo y se fue a vivir solo a las tierras salvajes. Allí fue hallado por su hermanastro Ificles, que lo convenció de que visitase el oráculo de Delfos. En penitencia por esta execrable acción, la sibila délfica le pidió que llevara a cabo una serie de trabajos que debía imponerle Euristeo, el mismo hombre que había usurpado su legítimo derecho a la corona micénica, y a quien más odiaba.

El orden tradicional de los trabajos es:

1. Matar al león de Nemea.
2. Matar a la hidra de Lerna.
3. Capturar a la cierva de Cerinea
4. Capturar vivo al jabalí de Erimanto.
5. Expulsar a las aves del Estínfalo.
6. Domar al toro de Creta.
7. Limpiar los establos de Augías.
8. Robar las yeguas de Diomedes.
9. Robar el cinturón de Hipólita.
10. Robar el ganado de Gerión.
11. Robar las manzanas doradas del jardín de las Hespérides.
12. Raptar al perro de Hades, Cerbero.

Prologue

When he regained his sanity and realized what he had done, he isolated himself from the world and went to live alone in the wilds. There he was found by his half-brother Iphicles, who convinced him to visit the oracle at Delphi. In penance for this execrable action, the Delphic sibyl asked him to carry out a series of tasks that must be imposed on him by Eurystheus, the same man who had usurped his legitimate claim to the Mycenaean crown, and whom he hated the most.

11. Steal the golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides.
12. Kidnapping Hades' dog, Cerberus.
