Today is the Day of Hungarian – Polish Friendship. This friendship has a long history: the common past, the similarity of our nations and our solidarity to each other’s freedom fights and revolutions. And – with no doubts – Kraków and Budapest are the two most beautiful cities of Europe.

The two nations founded their state almost in the same time and the Piast- and Arpad-dynasties worked together for centuries. Boleslav the 3rd and Könyves Kálmán sweared everlasting brotherhood and alliance. We had lots of kings with Polish origins and Poland had kings with Hungarian origins too (it’s enough to mention the Jagello-dynasty, István Báthori, Jadviga). In 1848, many Polish were fighting on our side, like Bem, Dembinski, Wysocki. We could repay the favour in 1863 when thousands of Hungarians went to fight for Polish freedom. In 1939 lots of Polish families found shelter in Hungary, and in 1956 we got a huge help from Poland again.

Unfortunatelly in this game, we are on opposite sides but it doesn’t mean we have to hate each other. There is small chance to get into the same alliance but there is one thing we can do: respect each other. Although we are enemies right now, we can admit if the other was smarter, stronger or just quicker. It doesn’t cost anything to say: „It was good job, great fun, bro”.

So, play the game, but don’t forget: Polak, Węgier, dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklanki.

May the RL friendship between our nations grow stronger every year!
