The Major Scandinavian Alliance Has Dissolved

Possibility of Northern European Union Lingers

Stockholm, Sweden- The world waits to see how events will unfold after the strongest alliance in the world was broken earlier today. Within the past hour the mutual protection pact between the Scandinavian superpowers of Norway and Sweden was canceled by Norway. If the deal was just a disagreement and a sign that relations between the two nations are in decline then Germany and Poland can breath in a sigh of relief.

All though mutual protection pacts only work defensively they do have offensive advantages. Take for example the Swedish invasion of Denmark. Norwegians could move to Sweden to aid their ally while at the same time if Norway is invaded they can defend their home country without having to move. Without this pact the two nations can not launch a joint assault on another nation without leaving their homeland vulnerable.

It is unlikely that these nations relations have deteriorated enough to cause war but there is a slight chance that Sweden wants control of Norway. They do hold a strong military strength advantage of 18,347 to 7,136 over Norway and both lack a strong ally so a Swedish take over of Norway would be possible but it would come with a very high cost. It would also take longer since Norway controls Finland now as well so there would be more territory to conquer. However this only neutralizes a huge geographical disadvantage Norway has in the fact that almost all of their territories except for Finish territories border Sweden and thus would be invaded fast. The Finish lands offer ground to retreat to. However since the Norwegian president was the one who canceled the pact this is unlikely to happen.

A Scandinavian war would please most of the European leaders who see the combined strength of Sweden and Norway as a threat but this may actually be a sign of worse times to come for the other European nations. If the two nations wish to unify through a non violent war then we will see a massive Northern European Union of Sweden,Norway,Finland, and Denmark. All the nations assembled under one flag greatly increases the chance of success for offensive campaigns south into mainland Europe. Germany would be a prime target, with a weak military and no protection pacts all though the total conquest of Germany would result in them sharing a border with Italy, one of the southern European powers. Poland could also be taken fairly easily and without creating a border with a powerful enemy but they do have a mutual protection pact with the U.S.. They would still win but it would be a harder nation to take.

Could we see a Northern European Union? Only time will tell, but we can all be assured today will be regarded as a very important day that we will look back upon in the future as the day that changed Europe for ever. Even just a mere cancellation of this alliance would offer much breathing room to other nations as they might be able to ally with one of the two powers themselves. It would also greatly reduce the chance of a successful invasion.
