The Knock
Eamonn DeValera
Too silent, the stillness of this room
nothing moves expectancy in the air,
a single heart beating full of fear
a love gone, I once held dear.
Blurring eyes as tears slip down
from a smiling face to a lonely frown
despairing fool with a broken heart
I stood and watched letting her depart.
Alone again with no joy to share
lost from the one who had time to care,
pushing her away with my manly might
I walk into the dark from the light.
The scenes from the window tell it all
a barren land unable to catch the fall
of a man broken, my life in disarray
I fall to my knees to silently pray,
to be relieved from this, my mortal sin
to pick up the pieces and finally win,
to let my heart be full of love
and sing the praises to God above.
But my soul is trapped in the shadow of doom,
quietly I cry, pacing this silent room,
backwards and forwards my feet lead the way
waiting for her to knock on my door this day.
The knock never comes, I am still alone,
still my heart doesn't believe she has gone,
one so fair and lovely to touch
her going away has been far too much.
I leave this room and walk far away
on the highest cliff my body does sway,
as the sun sets, I lose my frown
smiling I fall into the sea to drown.
