Supplies, Contest and the Thoughts of a Veteran

Day 2,132, 11:03 Published in USA USA by jadiv

This summer has seen an almost seamless series of special events in eRepublik. National contests, military units contests, specials where regeneration rate expansion are given as prizes, you name it the game has tried it.
While this is great marketing of the game at a time of normally slow activity, and I assume slow gold sales, certainly it has changed the nature of the game during this period. In-game advancement has become more a matter of amassing the most supplies, food and weapons, and going to town now. The significance of a campaign or battle isn’t important, just throw out as much damage as possible. This has been a change from the values that have served the game for a long time although I admit probably a profitable one for the game itself.

But what about the community? Or even the long term pattern that has been established for advancement in the game?

In the past the path to success in the game has been more long term persistence in training and fighting. Work every day, train everyday has been the traditional path to growth and advancement. To this end communities have evolved that have fostered this type of activity. Military units have been formed to pull labor for the good of the unit. Production of an organized group, with a little assistance from more advanced member that might be able to provide the means of production, could produce the needed food and weapons for an organized community. Communes were the focus of many of these militias and units. A success of a unit was often secured in this type of organization.

With the pressures of these recent contest however, the demand for the goods of a commune have far outstripped the ability to provide. Reserves have been depleted, honorable and proud soldiers have been reduced to begging for supplemental supplies to keep up the fights necessary to take advantage of the short term contest. Before I begin sounding like an oldfag allow me to say, there have been times when a given days available action wasn’t all that important in the overall strategy of the game; when we would fight ‘for rank and experience’, barehanded or with lower value weapons, in an effort to stockpile quality weapons for the day the pivotal battle was fought.

Now perhaps the special event of the summer are over, things will return to this old normal. And perhaps they are not. In either case it becomes important to us both as individuals and as militaries to establish a more sustainable, long term approach to the game. An attempt in essence to identify practices that will allow us to train, work, and fight for rank and experience at a consistent, self-sustainable pace.

First, join a military unit, militia or community that pools resources. If you are in a Unit, join their commune to take advantage of the community’s efforts to build and even to stockpile supplies. Although communes differ in the amount of supplies they may offer those that work in them, they almost all offer a level of compensation that is of far greater value than the mere salaries of jobs available on the open market. They provide the ability to stock pile weapons and to respond to priorities in the use of them. These communities often also provide the social element to the game; a chance to talk, a chance to learn about the game. It is after all friends and associations made in the game that keep people playing.

Pace yourself! This is a game played over a long time. Determine what supplies are available to you on a consistent basis and understand that a contest today doesn’t make the battle today more important than others. Throwing everything in to today’s (meaningless) battle may make you/us vulnerable tomorrow to the important action. Maintain a reserve of food, equipment, funds for such future important events.

Fight within yourself. There will be times that you might not be able to fight with every drop of you energy with the most advanced weaponry. The player that consistently fights, works and trains over a long period will be far more advanced than the one that burns the reserve stores today and has nothing tomorrow.

Understand that your unit/commune is not an endless source of supplies. A good unit hopefully is building a reserve of its own for the rainy day that may come.

Finally to the generation of players that have joined the game during this season of special events. The true reward in this game is winning the big battle; being with your unit mates and countrymen at these pivotal points. No medal, no special regen rate for a few days (for which you may not have the supplies or time to take full advantage of anyway) comes close to that satisfaction. For those of us eUS citizens, the battle of Karnataka or Hello Kitty, the sacking of Indonesia or the reclamation of California in WWIII were these types of event. There will be battles like these to come, will we be ready?
