Plato Admits eRep is Dead

Baby Gonna Leave Me (Mandatory listening)
Day 3034 of the New World
March 11, 2016
Earlier today I put out a shout.
I was trolling Plato because his leader board is still in quote-unquote beta mode.
Here's a screen cap of my Shout:
One of my favorite people in eRepublik commented in that Shout, linking an article by Alexis Bonte That was published just three days ago. It is an article describing the recent failure of the mobile game called Tactical Heroes developed by the same people who provide us with eRepublik.
I don't expect you to read that article, but if you do you will find the following illuminating comment made by the head of eRepublik labs:
"So was Tactical Heroes a waste of time and money? Honestly it would have been if we hadn’t had the luck of having a strong existing game with eRepublik.com that gave us the financial legs to take the learnings and try again. We know exactly what mistakes we made with Tactical Heroes… So yes it was worth it but we were fortunate that we were in a position that we could plan ahead that such a failure might happen and set aside sufficient funds to have another go."
I don't know how you can read that in any other way than to understand that eRepublic Labs is taking the money that you are investing in this game and using it to develop other games. That, of course, is entirely their privilege. They own this game and they can do with it what they want.
My question to you, if you are still spending RL money in eRepublik, is this:
Knowing what we now know, that eRepublik Labs is using eRepublik income to fund other games instead of using eRepublik income to fund eRepublik developments, are you willing to stop spending money in eRepublik?
I understand the gravity of the question.
I know what it means to look at your profile - at what you’ve spent years and hard earned cash developing - and imagining the prospect of simply abandoning it. It sucks.
But it would be equivalent to the ostrich burying its head in the sand if you can’t look at this situation and understand that eRepublik Labs has made a corporate decision to abandon the future of this game.
Do you understand what I am saying? Do you understand what Alexis Bonte is saying?
eRep Labs has abandoned eRepublik.
Yes, the servers are still running.
Yes, you can still buy gold and stashes and packs.
Yes, you can still click fight.
But this RL article states it in language as clear as language gets:
The only reason eRep Labs wants your money in eRep is so that they can make other games.
Now I don’t want to insult anyone. We all have the freedom to spend our RL money wherever we want to. And the fact is, eRep is (for the moment) a functioning gaming environment where RL cash buys you status. If you want to keep spending here, go nuts. I won’t judge you.
But if you are “investing” in your citizen’s future with the hope that some day you might enjoy the fun of being at the top of a vibrant and growing gaming community, think again. No browser game can survive forever without the firm commitment of its developers.
And eRepublik no longer has the firm commitment of its developers. They have admitted it in public. The gig is up.
The sad thing is that there is no reason why eRepublik could not continue to thrive with the proper commitment and investment. The very fact that it makes enough money to be able to fund a failed mobile app proves that the eRepublik concept is a winning one.
I am left to assume that the developers are chasing their own ego. It’s one thing to develop and succeed with a browser game that has survived for 8 years. But the only difference between continuing to pursue proven success in one game and chasing elusive success in multiple games is the potential inflation of the ego. “We have conquered multiple formats!” “We have succeeded with 3 games!” “We are awesome!”
I think I would have preferred, “We have stumbled upon something truly wonderful and we are going to dedicate our skills and energy to making it better and better and better.” That would have caused me to spend and spend and spend.
Hoo boy.

Plato Admits eRep is Dead

The entire eRepublik "team" is now 5 or 6 people - down from 25-30+ at its height. How does the game more forward with such a small team?
I remember them getting a whole boatload of money from some 'venture capitalist' like Bobby Axelrod. Many times I have wondered when the 'black limousine' would be pulling up to their front door.
RIP IN PEPPERONIS
That was something we all knew, they've been using eRep as a "cash cow" for a long 🙁
Thank you for your aticles. Who are we believing in the good in humans when we are treated like this?
That's what we, Antiplatonites, have been saying all the time! But enough of yadda-yadda talk, medals and battles. Let's fight Plato!
No fighting or spending anything!
No to all MPPs!
No to taxes!
Citizen message: Warning message for all new players!
I beleive in good) Selling my acc
I don't see at which part of the quoted response it says that they invest all the money they earn from erepublik to other games. It just says that erepublik is an earner so thay can use part of their profit in here to invest in other game. I'm not defending them, since there is obviously nothing done in here, i just find your assumption is not based on solid facts.
On the other hand, saying that they have sufficient funds one could assume that they will not abandon erep since they will loose that source of income and it's not to their benefit to start loosing more money.
The fact that changes in eRep take years to implement tells me that developers work on something else. When they started tactical heroes, my first reaction was that it is a huge mistake to develop game that is a clone of thousands of similar online games instead of focusing on eRep which was unique concept and had huge consumer base.
One of two reasons why I stopped tanking was the fact that money was used for other games instead of improving eRepublik. The other reason was lack of time to play like I used to.
Well said
I totally agree with both you and the article. My only objection is intje interpretation of the quoted message.
Other than that they seem to be progressing really slowly in the changes.
Just look at erep... Any big changes/upgrades,last year?
All game labs use their money to make new games. So I don´t really see what is the problem here.
That they are not fixing this one first
I dont really see what amount of money can fix this game + they dont spend all money to other games.
Do you realize how much does it cost to make a new game from scratch like the one they just failed on? I am sure having people with a bit more brains in their development department and having them look closely at eR current issues should cost nearly close
This one is in BETA and they are pulling money out of it instead of putting money in.
If I owned a game, I would care only for profit, like current admins do. People whine all the time that game is bad but I don't think their profit is decreasing. When it does start to decrease and it will at one point if everything remains the same for a longer period of time, we can expect changes and developments to increase their profit again.
Players got to organize and fight back
Doubtful.
If the profits drop they will add more "Free Spins" or some other contrivance.
If they drop more they will pull the plug.
You would fail as an owner then. If you truly cared about profit, you would make your most profitable game even more profitable. They aren't doing that, and because of that, they are losing.
erep isn't dead, just has been set on autopilot long time a go
old player great wisdom.
thanks mate but may not prove the wisdom of someone playing this game for so long 😃
Stay calm and keep feeding Plato.
We can bring that vampire down, get an Antiplatonite party in your country as well!
They will lose this game too if they start doing something.

I sent a ticket, not so long ago, and I was personally assured that eRepublik is being taken the same care as other projects, and that we shouldn't expect a lowered service. Lies.
Since a few months I decided to stop buying packs or stashes, and that's why I am not a legend yet, but I am proud of my choice. I only bought once in the last months and it was a gift from a friend who expressely asked that.
The main point is not what is made with the earnings from eRepublik. If this product was good, I wouldn't mind paying for it to give funds to other projects. The real problem is that this product is structured to fool people that earn a lot in RL (but often have a serious lack of self-esteem, so they need online glorification), without granting them a good service.
Nobody can reasonably state that using huge money for a browser game is a normal behaviour, unless the product itself lets you really build something valuable with that money. If you had a son or a daughter spending huge money to play Tetris, wouldn't you be freightened? And what is the difference between losing money here and losing them playing poker? There is none, and people who do are considered addicteds.
If there was an "investment" in any purchase, it wouldn't be such a drug. If we were spending money for people we really care of, in a contest where they receive a good service, and can have a healthy entertainment together, I would understand and I would again give my full support.
But now players are abandoned to themselves and their money. Plato keeps the communities in a half-developed situation, so they don't become strong enough to easily resist without eRep (migrating to another game, for example) and they don't get weak enough to make people forget about the possibilities to earn some kind of reputation with money.
You are forgetting about the patriotism factor and the fact that you get (use to) to do things with a group of friends. You can't do that in tetris xd
I don't consider patriotism playing a browser game. If I wanna be a patriot I go and help someone in my community. And the true friends are the one that will last even if you leave erep.
Well one doesn't preclude you from doing the other if you want to help your community as well.
But you are right in saying no one is more patriotic that other for spending money in an online game. However, patriotism is an idea, it's a sentimental feeling that the game takes advantage of to hook you up in the game.
If you need a category as to explain why tou spend the koney it would be entertainment. Whether you sticj around and spend money because of your ego, lack of self esteem, patriotism or team work and friends that is for each one to decide
That's what Plato takes advantage of.
Stealing is when you get something without the will and the cooperation of the owner. Fraud is when you get something without the will but with the cooperation of the owner.
There's a point where taking advantage of others' weaknesses becomes illegal, and there's a point (which eRep passed long ago) where taking advantage of others' weaknesses becomes immoral.
eRep is now so tailored to emphasize individual success (to milk more revenue) , I can only envy someone still chasing patriotic issues and having fun in fights for sake of fighting due to their low barrier of entertainment.
"And what is the difference between losing money here and losing them playing poker?"
In poker you have the chance and legal right to win something back.
so? how do you wanna change the situation?
.. and even without this blog-post nearly every eRepublik user knows the current situation over here, it isn't something new that they invest the money earned from eRepublik into new games.
.. so.. yeah.. how should we deal with it? stop buying packs? ok. and then? some people will still continue to buy them.. what else could we do? send messages on facebook? write some comments to his post (oh wait he blocked it).. ehm.. yeah.. i don't think we can change anything.. we can just try to make the best of this situation.. or stop playing this game.
No, we can organize and strike back
Open EREP wiki then and find Erepublik Rebelion article 🙂
U want yourself there after all u invested, fine 😃
Sure, they ban one, another one will take his place and do the same thing.
It is very simple: The sole purpose of eRep seems to be as a cash generator for other ventures. If we want them to focus on eRep in terms of creating features and improvements we need to send a message to them by withholding money. If they unified, the top100 spenders could change the course of this game in a week.
Poland! Poland! Poland!
The worldmap is still in beta version as well
So does the mobile version
For years!
I can understand eRep Labs.
I wouldn't put all my eggs in 1 basket. Especially if that basket is 6 years old.. x.x
That is why you keep improving this product that brings profit and you work on it until it runs its course. Then you use your earnings to make a new project. You don't kill the profitable game to finance the new project that has no guarantees of success.
but what you probably need is investors, and you can't attract investors with a single aging product in this industry. You wouldn't even be able to hold onto your development team because it would do nothing for their careers. even if they managed to keep the playerbase static.
Am I the only one who doesn't see anything wrong with this game?
I, for an example, never gave a penny for this game. Not for any game, to be more precise. And here I've got exactly what I've paid for - nothing. I have to train for two years to become noticable at the battlefield, I have to steal to raise a Q7 whatever, I have to beg to upgrade my training facilities, etc. Just like all of you who do not pay for playing this game.
We do not pay.
WE DO NOT PAY.
We have nothing to complain about. Did you ever go to a bar, order a glass of water and complain about beer being to sweet, sour, expensive?
If you do not pay you can not achieve anything in this game anymore. That's it. Face it. Wether it's an in-game or out-of-the-game purchase (buying accs), you have to pay. You just have to. And that's the reason this game has never been more perfect - because you have to pay to play it. Well, to play it at its best, that is.
So I don't see a problem, actually... Want to be strong? Buy an Infantry Kit! Want the economy to work and earn some ccs with your workers and companies? Buy a Tycoon pack! Want to be friends with someone? Send them a gift! It's like in rl, actually...
Cheers!
I think this article is for people that do pay to play and hope to have the game improvements on regular basis.
