IRA changes its name to Irish Volunteer Force.

Day 308, 13:13 Published in Ireland Ireland by Brian Boru

Today, 23rd September 2008, the Irish Republican Army officially changed its name to the Irish Volunteer Force (IVF).

The change came as part of a successful merger vote between the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the IRA. The merger means that the IRB shall play a larger role in decisionmaking, and increasing international involvement is planned.

The IRA and IRB shall become official divisions of the IVF, retaining their current hierarchies in order to preserve the effective command structure already in place.
Both are still independent of each other, but have a more unified Council.
