1st Armoured Chronicles (Chapter 8)

Day 1,381, 10:25 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Henry Hank Moody

Gunnery Sergeant Titan (the smash) had the unfortunate task of taking the point when entering the mangled wreckage of the truck. He had two men close behind him, yet for Sergeant Titan they may as well have been a thousand miles away for all the good their presence did.

His heart was rattling against his ribs in an attempt to burst free from its prison of bones. Sweat crept down his face and began stabbing hot spikes through his eyes. The flashlight at the end of his rifle did nothing to push back the darkness inside the truck and Titan fancied he could almost hear a small laugh just at the edge of his hearing.

“One step at a time,” he muttered to himself. One boot was placed inside the truck and Titan tried to shine the light into the corners. The light made it a few inches before it was eaten by the darkness. As the Sergeant stepped fully into the truck the light spluttered and died. His entire world went black, everything around was a pitch black darker than the deepest cave on Earth. Spinning around searching for the hole in the trucks side Titan found nothing but more blackness. The dark encroached upon him and that laugh whispered just behind his right ear.

StockyRocky, one of the groups best snipers, watched with a growing sense of fear as Gunnery Sergeant Titan disappeared into the darkness. There was no sound from within the truck, no light and the two men behind him faltered on the entrance.

“What the f**k is going on here?” Grabbing a glow stick from his belt he moved to the truck and threw it into the dark which quickly moved back bathing the truck in the hellish green light of the glow torch. Rocky gasped and ran forward.

Titan vaguely heard the metallic clang as his rifle fell from his lifeless fingers and crashed to the floor of the truck. With one hand he touched what remained of his neck and pulled it away, he could feel the blood seeping through his glove and slowly his head twisted to the side and fell to join his rifle. His body remained standing for a split second before it too crumpled to the ground.

There was a small part of Dakota remaining in the mind of the animated corpse and it looked on with disgust as what once was her mouth dug deep into the fleshy neck of Titan and her hands began ripping apart his body to get at the still warm organs.

Rocky and a dozen other 1st armoured soldiers were crowded around the ruined body of Gunnery Titan. Little of his mortal flesh remained, it looked more like a skeleton wrapped in the uniform of a 1st armoured Sergeant. Small pieces of flesh still clung stubbornly to the bones but the organs and most of his flesh appeared to be missing, the teeth marks on the ribcage did give some indication as to the reason for the missing flesh.

“Sir.” The voice came from a young Private who was standing in the corner studying a pile of upturned medical equipment.

“What is it Private?”

“Appears to be another body here S…” He trailed off as Dakota opened her eyes, a smile spread across the slowly rotting flesh of her face and a black tongue licked her lips in anticipation.
