[Portugal Unido - Artigo NÂș584] - Freedom: 25 April

Day 4,539, 15:14 Published in Portugal Portugal by Alvaro Cunhal

The April 25 Revolution, also known as the Carnation Revolution or the April Revolution, refers to an event in the history of Portugal related to the political and social movement, which took place on April 25, 1974, which deposed the dictatorial regime of State Novo, in force since 1933, and which started a process that would come and end with the implantation of a democratic regime and with the entry into force of the new Constitution on April 25, 1976, marked by strong socialist orientation.

This action was led by a military movement, the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), composed mostly of captains who participated in the Colonial War and who had the support of military officers. This movement started in 1973, based on corporate demands as a struggle for the prestige of the armed forces, ending up reaching the current political regime. With reduced military power and a mass adhesion of the population to the movement, a reaction by the regime was practically nonexistent and non-existent, with only four civilians killed and forty-five wounded in Lisbon, hit by DGS bullets.

The movement entrusted a leadership of the country to the Junta de Salvação Nacional, which assumed the powers of state organs. Followed by a period of great social, socialism, political and military upheaval known as PREC (Ongoing Revolutionary Process), marked by demonstrations, occupations, provisional governments, nationalizations and military.

It stabilized a political situation, the work of the Constituent Assembly continued for a new democratic constitution, which came into force on April 25, 1976, or on the same day as the first legislatures of the new Republic. Following these events, a national holiday was instituted in Portugal on April 25, called "Freedom Day".
