[Congress] Discussion Article, 3rd-5th December
Addaway
Hello All, this is the first public discussion article for Congress of the new system. In this article we are going to have some brief updates from Congress and details of some ongoing debates.
Speaker Election
After a 24 hour nomination period, there was only one candidate (myself), that accepted nominations to become Speaker and I was thus elected unopposed.
Prince Harry had been nominated, but declined to be considered before subsequently resigning from Congress.
Proposals Made
You will probably have seen this article by BP Congress member Gosha63, who is arguing that we should lower food import tax in order to lower prices on the UK market.
What do congress members, and indeed the public, think of this?
Comments
As a Foreigner i used to sell food on eUK markets, Now a days i sell enough on my home market to be doing that. If importers are smart they will just raise the praise with what the Import tax costs.
Your food prices are extra high. This does imply that eUK citizen that doesn't need to pay the tax are charging alot extra.
Also that there is lack of food in your market, so the import tax might not help much anyway..
- Just a foreigner taking some interest in your politics.
It may be we don't have enough producers in the eUK to be able to justify max import tax on finished products.
Or most people in the eUK makes enough food to be self sufficient but doesn't make a sufficent surplus to put it on the market. The small extra I make is stocked for for the times that there is a competition or a free 9 anniversary gift of a +900 health house.
There has been the gradual dying off of old time players who probably had a huge stack of factories churning out stuff
Mixed feelings about the price of food - most of my production is on hold because it cost more to produce than I could get for the finished product, so higher prices help those of us who are making the stuff.
Then I go to buy food for the NHS with the funds donated, and the prices are through the roof.....
There has to be a happy medium, if a slight change in tax would help that I'd support it, but not so much that we are flooded with imports and it becomes cheaper to buy than produce.
Well the secret is buy when prices are low and sell when they're high - imagine you're playing the stock market. I'm a bit puzzled as to why you would find it costs more to produce than you could sell for when prices are high? Even if you are buying WRM, I would have thought the profits would be greater with higher selling prices?
Should have been clearer - I didn't produce for a very long time due to the low prices, so I got out of the habit of producing anything. I try to buy when prices are low but sometimes they're high for a very long stretch and I still have to buy some to meet the demand.
I will copy my thoughts over from the article by Gosha63:-
The problem is people go from one extreme to the other - we had 10% then all of a sudden we went to 99%
Now this latest increase in the prices is worldwide and began when the 9th anniversary rewards were dished out. It may well be prices settle back down again and it seems as though the increase has steadied. Prices across the world are now around 0.125 per HP. I would suggest we look to reduce to around 15%.
^ This. The 9th anniversary broke the economy short term. It'll find a balance again. Sure, the balance might be higher than before, but that's economics for you.
Perhaps a short-term reduction in tax might be a solution and help to invigorate the markets, but considering the rest of the world is suffering similarly maybe we should first look at what other countries are doing. I'd do that but hey, can't be arsed and vodka.
I think a reduction to about 20% would be perfectly fine... it was at 10% and we just jumped it to 99%...
I've proposed the increase 3 months ago, will vote against the reduction, I don't mind the price (Btw, I don't sell or produce food, I still buy it from the eUK market, I only produce weapons).
but how much food do you use in a day/week? if you use the amount i do then the hight food prices are a killer.
I see your point, I don't use as much food as before, I'm more not fighting than fighting. On the other hand, you have people who still produce food for the market, they are happy that they can earn some money from it these days, and compared to other small countries, it is even cheaper than in some. But yes, it is not a big impact on me personally. But tbh, in the past when I needed large amounts of food, was always looking for the cheapest country 😃
Luckily, as you know, there is nothing stopping you from buying from another countries markets.
And if there is a high price globally, changing the UK's import tax laws aren't going to solve it.
99% import tax seems too high.
Going to start a vote on the Food Import tax issue later this evening- I will put 20% in seeing as thats the highest that has been proposed, then if we need to lower it later again we can.
A major issue for myself is that the company tax appears to cover all companies which when applied to actually making the raw materials hurts far more significantly that on the companies actually making the finished food product. Its just cheaper to buy the raw material then make it currently. Though recently this is close to changing but still impacts upon the finished product price via ability. I am unsure if all companies are limited to the same tax or there is a sub classification possible.
