Masca este un element ritualic prezent la toate popoarele lumii.
Măștile purtate în diferite evenimente din preajma sărbătorilor de iarnă, în România și Republica Moldova, au o simbolistică legată de cultul venerării animalelor sacre , unele fiind asociate cu Cultul Soarelui.
Jocul măștilor își are originea în mituri străvechi.
