Blessed Samhain

Day 3,998, 12:01 Published in Belgium Cyprus by Vincent Pain

The celebration of Samhain (Celtic New Year) traditionally begins at sunset on the evening of October 31st.

Around this time we will find more festivities such as Halloween (October 31), All Saints Day (November 1), All Souls (November 2) and Dia de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead). All share the same theme, namely death. The celebration of Samhain traditionally begins at sunset on the evening of October 31st. Many start in the evening. This comes from the Celts, who started the day with the evening instead of the morning.

During this celebration the separation between the dead world and our world is wafer thin. It is therefore believed that the dead are again present in this world during Samhain. It is the 'feast of the dead'. This makes Samhain a suitable moment to commemorate and honor the deceased. At Samhain the table is again covered for deceased family members. Symbolically, food can be placed on the altar (as well as, for example, a plate with napkin to indicate that the deceased is welcome to 'push'). Food can also be left behind for the dead outside.
