Translation of an old letter
ClioPilot
Friends,
I am looking for help translating an old letter. This letter is from 1599 and it mentions my distant ancestor. If there is someone who can translate this, please send the translation to my inbox. The translation does not have to be 100% complete. I need to understand the essence of the text. Thank you
For those who help me, I will send some weapons and food.

It's in Hungarian all right, but it's written in an archaic dialect and is extremely hard to read.
thank you on information, any help is welcome.

hvala
Although I don't have a degree in it, I have a pretty good understanding of archaic Hungarian. I studied it in primary and secondary school, and I can actually make sense of it at a logical level (it's a strong disadvantage for people with today's lexical knowledge). The colleague you refer to does not, I think, fully understand Hungarian, even if he is of Hungarian origin. Unfortunately, a lot of people here cannot use the Hungarian language correctly even when they are adults, which is why they cannot learn other foreign language/languages. That's it, Hungarian is a difficult language.
And yes, languages do change, constantly. But note that at that time, due to external influences, the lords living in the border areas wrote their texts in three languages, mixe😛 German, Turkish, Hungarian, and in some places even Croatian.
In my case, I have two problems: resolution and handwriting. I notice the patterns, there are similarities, but for example the same letter is "drawn" in many different ways by its author. I also notice some proper names, which would bring me closer to the solution.
If I find something, I'll let you know. On first reading (10 minutes) it looks to me rather like a correspondence about prisoners.
Have you tried Reddit? There are subreddits for that, I'm sure there are guys who solve it in less than 24h
Very beautiful. Latin alphabet yet looks a bit like Islamic calligraphy. Can't read the cursive only make out the odd word, jobbágy - poor serfs. The writer at the top: Us Suleyman pasha from Gods mercy, servant of the Turkish sultan, governor of Buda (western part of Budapest for you but obviously referring to the entire pashalik governed from Buda), patron of Hungary.
Huhh, it is a real hungarian text, but ancient and only fragments are readable.
First page:
What I understan😛 name of Suleiman Pasha is in the first line.
first two line:
"Suleiman pasha : For the wish of the mighty god.."
Original: "?? Szuleyman Passa: Az hatalmas Isten akarattyabol"
Theireok (??) csaszarnak hely tartó Budán:
"For Theoreok (??) emperor who is a warden of Buda" (Buda= Western part of Budapest, at those times there is no "Budapest", but two twin cities: "Pest and Buda".
"es gondjairavieleore magiar orszagnak" (old hungarian) --> "és gondviselője Magyarországnak" (new hungarian) --> "and protector of Hungaria"
Second page:
A name found!: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batthy%C3%A1ny_Ferenc_(horv%C3%A1t_b%C3%A1n)
end of first line: "Nagos Vrnak" --> "nagyságos úrnak" --> "to your majestry"
Batthányi Ferenc, he lived at those times. "Batthányi Ferenc De Németújvár " (?), second line."
Maybe it is the adressing: "to your majestry Batthányi Ferenc De Németújvár"
third line: "szabados uramnak" --> "to mr Szabados"
a fragment at the end of 4th lin and start: "Barátunk- nak" --> "to our friend" (??)
I cannot read the further texts.
But, there is an interesting stamp on a text: "Battyhányi hercegi levéltár Körmend" --> Duke Batthyány Archives Körmend.
Batthyány --> famous Hungarian noble familiy
Körmen😛 hungarian city.
The archive still exists!!!: http://bok.kormend.hu/main.php?Lang=EN
They may help you, more than me! contact page: http://bok.kormend.hu/Contact.html

I wish you good luck. 🙂 Sorry that the Budapest State Archives did able to not translate it 🙁
What is your story about this doc? (if it is public)
My direct ancestor is Suleiman Pasa. My family and I are researching his history.
Correction: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batthyány_Ferenc_(főispán) hi lived at 1599.
hi hi hi taliban
Jó kis puzzle.
Az első bekezdés a küldő lenne talán. Mi Szulejmán Pasa, A hatalmas Istennek akaratából, Török császárnak fő helytartója Budán, És gondviselője magyar országnak.
Most dobtál tucatnyi lekérést a levéltár weblapjára, részemről +1
🙂
It is a nigerian prince from Wien, Austria. 😉
