Tokky the Panda: The Mysterious Forest

Day 3,135, 10:43 Published in France France by AlI Might

Hello eWorld,

This is the start of a series of articles making one whole story. But this story is different from the ones we just write when we’re bored. This story has been written, turn by turn, by kittib and myself. It starts with a paragraph written by myself, then another written by kittib and it goes on this way. Now, we’ll both let you read, we hope you’ll like it and will have a fun read as we had fun writing it together.

Hello, I’m Tokky. My parents always used to tell me that life is just a long quiet river when I was young. It was true, I was a young and innocent Panda playing with his friends in the little wooden village of Pandas and I had nothing to worry about, till the day I had the curiosity to go deep into the forest because of my aventurer soul. And this story, is my story about how the long quiet river turned into a sea storm.

Life in the deep bamboo forests of Japan is quite a bliss. You can sit among the bamboo eating all day, sleeping, playing, or even watch the clouds for hours as they float lazily across the sky. I have always been fascinated about the tall mountains around the forest that seemed to be reaching the sky, wondering what was at the top of them. The thought of going to explore their mysteries did not leave my mind, making me more and more curious as the days passed.

I still remember, one autumn day, my friends and I were playing with a huge stack of leaves. Diving, jumping, running into them, throwing leaves at each other. At some point, the wind was very strong and my friend, Pacca, unconsciously started to run after a bunch of leaves flying in the air like a happy bird in the first days of Spring. He got close to this forest, that our parents always have warned us not to approach. I felt a fear running through my veins and quickly grabbed him by the back to pull him away from the forest. I remember an acute noise that caught my attention, but the fear was strong enough for me to run away.

In the days that followed, however, I couldn’t stop thinking about that horrifying noise I heard. It tormented me, I was struggling between the desire of knowing what was making that unearthly noise and and the panic of remembering how scared I was when I heard it. Every time I looked that way I had chills down my spine and more than once imagined what would have happened to Pacca if he had entered that eerie forest.

It was one day, when Baggoo, our climbing tree teacher was teaching us a lesson about how to lay down on a branch without breaking it, while quietly eating leaves and herbs, that the desire grew more and more. It was so boring around, and I couldn’t prevent myself from throwing looks at the forest. I felt like an adventurer after all, and an adventurer should chase all mysteries, no matter what the risk would be. I decided to plan my departure for a journey through the forest, to discover why we’ve been told to never get into it all this time. I chose the night time so nobody could notice I left.

I must confess, though, that I wasn’t the bravest panda around. I left quietly, feeling a bit uneasy and already starting to regret my decision. After reaching the forest, I stood in front of it for some time, hesitating and thinking if it was really worth it what I was about to do. There were no strange noises coming from it this time, but the air was heavy and suffocating. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and entered the forest. There was no path to follow, so all I could do was pray not to get lost and to be able to find my way out.

As I had packed up a few stuff in my little bag, I knew I could have what I needed in case I got to travel through the forest longer than what I thought. I walked through it, slowly, paying attention to any moves from the vegetations and noises from any living being that was moving. To make sure I could find my way back to the Panda village, I was using my claws to make a straight scratch mark on the trees that I passed by. I have no idea how long have been walking, the night was making the forest very dark and glaucous. Nothing happened, I felt a little disappointed as I was getting deeper and deeper into the forest till.. a little light, far away, attracted my eyes.

From that distance, I couldn’t tell exactly what it was, so I knew I had to get closer to it. My whole body was tense, as I was walking towards the light, knowing that at that very moment I was taking a risk that who knows, it could have cost me my own life. As I was getting closer, I could hear a vague sound, something that seemed like a child’s cry. It wasn’t a cry of despair or fear, it sounded more like a cry of sadness and loneliness.

I kept on walking in the direction of the sound and little light, slightly accelerating as the sound was getting louder. I was scratching on trees with my claws and cutting branches to clear the way out. I suddenly found out, that the light, was a sun ray from the sky making its way through the twigs, realising I spent the whole night walking and walking.. I cut the few branches left to find myself in front of an enormous plain and quiet ground with high herbs and mountains in the back, the ones we could see far away from the Panda village. The sound seemed to come from the high herbs further away.

I kept heading towards the place where the crying came from, this time slowly and cautious. I stopped and wanted to say something, but all that came out was a faint “Hello?”. The crying ceased, followed by a deep sigh. I wanted to do something, but my body froze, so I stood there, waiting for something to happen, rivers of cold sweat streaming down my face. Suddenly, the bushes started to move and my heart started racing.

This felt like the time was slowing down, I was staring at the bushes till a little snout popped out of it. I gathered all my courage to let out another faint “Hello?”. Quickly, a little raccoon got out of the bushes, looking at me with wet eyes and sniffling. He stared, moved his snout up and smelled the air. “He-He-.. Hello” he said with a low voice. I realy saw any raccoons before, in the Panda village we just stick to each other and are kind of closed on ourselves. I asked “Who are you ? Why are you crying ?”. With this low and sad voice he replied “I-.. I am Sn-Snooky… I am so sad, th-this place w-was once a huge village wh-where a lot of us, raccoons, were gathering.. An-and, these big Titans.. From th-the mountains, th-they crushed and destroyed it all..”.

I stared at the little creature, dumbfounded. “Titans? What are these Titans you are talking about?” “I will tell you everything I know about them, but first we have to find a safe place, before the night falls”, replied Snooky. “Follow me, I know a little cave at the base of the mountains”. I started walking behind him, constantly thinking about those creatures called Titans that I had just found out about. Turns out the forest was the least scary thing around and, by the looks of it, this couldn’t possibly end well…

Snooky, really seemed to know all these places very well. He was running and jumping easily, as if he could close his eyes and still know where he heads. We reached the cave and sat in.
“So.. These Titans, they’re said to be living in the moutains up there.. We never saw them because they get out in the darkened nights but we know they are so big.. And.. And we just can only hear them, growling.. It’s so scary” he told with a voice filled with sadness and fear. I suddenly had a flash in my head.. And I remembered about the Panda village, my family, my friends.. But it is too late to go back. I emptied my mind to focus on this right moment and my brain made me let out firmly “We need more of us and we’ll walk to the mountains to face this mistery about what you call.. Titans”.
