The Economist ~ PANAM, more graphs, and WOLDY TIME

Day 1,197, 10:02 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Spite313

Dear friends,

Today I logged into the forum to find a post copied from the USA forums, written by St Krems (the SG of PANAM) announcing that the alliance was on the brink of collapse. He has resigned in frustration due to extreme problems right at the heart of PANAM. I said a month ago to congress that PANAM had no focus, no unity and no future. It was a knee-jerk reaction to the formation of NWO, aimed only at limiting the success of the new power bloc. The Brazilians and Americans have little in common. South America dislikes Hungary and Spain. The USA likes Spain. The USA dislikes Serbia and Indonesia. South America likes Serbia and Indonesia.

In this case the breaking point came with the NE declaration against the USA from Indonesia. According to St Krems, the USA had long been neglecting it’s duties to defend other PANAM members, which is a consistent failing of the USA since I started playing the game in 2008. When Indonesia NE’d the USA, the two South American powers have been lukewarm at best about defending them, and rumour has it that they may actually support an Indonesian invasion, and will certainly defend Indo against any potential counter-attack.

Moving onto the graphs section of the article, we can look at some of the underlying economic factors involved in this shocking revelation. When NWO was formed, it’s power was overwhelmingly large, and economically it was quite possibly equal to all of the remaining countries combined. Since then, the overall economic shift has seen the three alliances become relative equals. The “huge threat” of NWO has receded, and with that recession has come the disappearance of the fear factor which held PANAM together. With the Brazil-Spain war comfortably won by PANAM, and the Polish beaten in France and the USA, the PANAM member countries are a lot less paranoid about being overwhelmed by “pig-disgusting imperialists”. Although NWO only has four members, and pound for pound is the strongest, both EDEN and PANAM are at times a match for it.

As you can see, NWO and EDEN are almost equal, PANAM slightly smaller. About 15% of global income in developed by non-aligned countries, mainly Macedonia, Slovenia, Sweden, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Another shift which has had a massive effect on internal relations in PANAM has been the economic decline of the USA and the rise of South America. Several months ago, Argentina was the smallest economy out of the three American powers. Now it is roughly equal to Brazil. Argentina alone produces one quarter of PANAM’s income, and South America represents half of PANAM income. This is stark contrast to this time a year ago, when the USA had more than treble the income of both South American economies combined. This change in circumstance may mean that the USA has been overextending itself, our being “too big for its boots”, alienating their allies to the South.

Imbalance of power?

Finally, the third potential upset that we can identify from basic economics is the relationship between EDEN and PANAM. It was assumed that PANAM would require EDEN help (and vice versa) to contain NWO. However, one of the first wars of the new bloc was between Turkey and Greece, who represent the two “friendly” alliances. After this war, terrible diplomacy by PANAM resulted in a humiliating peace deal being accepted by PANAM leadership against the will of Turkey’s population, seemingly to placate the Greeks. Since then, the economy of South America has grown considerably, as well as the economies of Croatia and Bulgaria. Although individually no PANAM or EDEN country could go toe-to-toe with Serbia or Poland, collectively the alliances are fairly evenly matched. So the one factor which bound the two alliances together (fear) disappeared. This means that EDEN might not even bother to help PANAM (who rarely help them) and therefore the whole principle of PANAM, which is to unite the world PEACE style against NWO, is defunct.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say that I am backing Mr Woldy in the upcoming UK Presidential election. I have worked with Woldy on and off for nearly two years now, and I can safely say that he’s one of the UK’s top international figures and an unsurpassed diplomat- exactly what we need in tough times. Woldy was President through the collapse of PEACE GC and not only successfully negotiated the UK into Phoenix, he helped write the constitution and put the UK at the heart of that alliance.

Considering the extremely uncertain times, what we need now is someone with a huge depth of experience in international relations. As a billion-time MoFA and international representative of Phoenix (as well as SG) Woldy has friends in every country. Even countries invading us can’t help but like Woldy, and that’s exactly what we need.

Some may say that this very experience is a negative: that we should get someone new in. Woldy started his political career writing very helpful and insanely popular new player guides. He has continued that tradition throughout his eLife, and has always went for roles where he can help new players out and advance keen citizens up through the ranks. All in all: voting Woldy is great not just for the UK, but also for you.

Hope that on the 5th you make a great decision for the UK,

Iain
