May the Best Candidate Win!

Day 775, 19:41 Published in Ireland Ireland by AppleMan

My first term as President is almost over and I would like to share a few things I have learned and see as we transition to a new term.

Let me first say that I was quite surprised at the National Goals set by my opponents. I know I set a precedent last month by having high goals for the country, only one of which we will probably achieve. However, this system is meant to bring pride to our citizens and inspire national unity. I set mine at 1% because I want Ireland to have a chance at more than 1 monument next month. We all know that the system calculations are very flawed but nonetheless, let's play the game.

Now, I try to be sympathetic when new players scream that we must invade Northern Ireland. It's a huge topic for RL Ireland, I get it. Every 2-3 months the idea even gains enough momentum to influence elections. Fortunately, in my elifetime, it has never been acted on - this would be truly disasterous. Even to support the idea in a public election is dangerous.

I am glad to see such a diverse and full field of Presidential candidates. A new generation of players is making a name for themselves in the halls of power. Only a few remain from the first generation, even the much admired Michael Collins left recently. I see this as a healthy process and am delighted to see the positive exchange of knowledge and power.

There has been alot of talk recently about 'oligarchy'. I can tell you with confidence that this is simply not the case. The in-game government system, including Ireland's, is set up as a Republic. This means that a small group of elected leaders make decisions for the whole, this simply the way it works. With this in mind, we must be careful to avoid 'cronyism'. Any President who choses his Cabinet based on party or personal connections instead of merit and experience only makes himself and his county weak. To be honest, I still don't know which party some of my ministers belong to 😉

To finish up, I hope we all learn from eIreland's history and use it to grow our country. Next term's President is in for some hard work. I hope to be that President but I know Ireland will make the right decision. May the best Candidate win!
