Daghda: no, that's pure bullshit. You have more liberty and freedom of choice in a democracy any day of the week. Some people born and living in democracy keep whining about how poorly they are being governed, and turn to totalitarian ideologies instead (usually the dumbest ones). However, a Fascist or Communist state is always a nightmare compared to the worst run democracy.

A countries economic freedom is hardly defined by the size of its companies. Following that logic China would be freer than any country in Europe.
Germany got a pretty bureaucratic/socliast blend to it and is hardly a free market economy.

Coming from totalitarian corner I am not surprised that Daghda regards anyone who has the bare choice between a strawberry or apple bubblegum as being "free", but there really is more to it than just that.

Sometimes you haven't even a choice really, like in the so called "land of the free".A two party democracy in which the party which spends the most money for election campaigns gets the president in the end.Where over 90% of the people haven't even a passport to get out of the country.Where politicians must do what the capitalistic lobbyists want them to do.Thats how capitalism works.
The only freedom you really have is to make your own, personal decisions.
Money = Power
politicians haven't money, since they gave the power of the money to the banks.

Haha girl, believe it or not, but I do work (well not right now obviously, else I wouldnt be here).

Also I do know that Germany runs a fairly evened-out model, but its hardly laissez faire. For every thing you are allowed to do, there are two things you are forbidden to....so there is a definite room for improvement on the economic freedom front.
And, in ym opinion anyways, personal freedoms ARE the foundation of economic freedoms. I know there are certain hybrids (i.e. China), but innovation will never take place if the individuals are in ideologic shackles.

Well who exactly has economic freedom? On a personal level you can have wealth, which allows one to buy privileges unavailable to the general populace. On a national level, there isnt a country on the planet which isnt embroiled in complex debt, either as a lender and influencer/master, or as a borrower and slave.
Innovation never takes place on a national level. Individuals create innovation. Innovative individuals thrive despite/in spite of political environments. Why? Because their inventions make money - so they will always have access to funds though not necessarily the commercial and legal nous to retain control.
Ofc we can all have opinions, but there is a basic premise, he who holds the funds holds the cards.
Thats all.

I'm Hungarian irl so I know both sides too. And there is a difference, e.g. now none of my family is improisoned, deported, or killed by the state. I can travel to anywhere, police doesn't come to search my flat for prohibited books, I can choose my job, buy what I want, and express any opinion that comes to my mind.

When I was talking of economic freedoms, I was thinking of economic freedoms on the micro-level.

Meaning the right to freely chose which education to pursue, which job to take, which products to buy (or NOT to buy)...the freedom of opening a business and developing/producing and selling whatever good or service you fancy, etc.

I do not agree that innovative individuals will "always" succeed. In an eastern german type of environment you dont have above freedoms. If your innovation doesnt fit the doctrine, you can forget about it or risk going to jail.

You surely never lived under a totalitarian regime, or you'd have known the vast difference. I know the difference, because I lived in both communism and democracy. What you think is the flaw of democracy is actually the flaw of not having ENOUGH democracy (aka free competition). Democracy, as a concept, allows for fighting those flaws. Totalitarian ideologies like Fascism or Communism don't.
