HIGHWAY TO HELL

Day 4,878, 18:53 Published in Malaysia Malaysia by Amli Nujhan
I'm writing this in memory of my ex-room mate, Chummy, who's just passed away recently. May his soul rests in peace.

This story was told by Chummy some 35 years ago; during our A-Levels years.
I'm sure this is a very famous and popular lore which many of you have heard from various verbal sources or Youtubers.
With many versions out there, it's doesn't matter...
But, Chummy got this story from his sister... and his sister was told by her best friend; who's the woman in this story.

The Karak Highway.
Listed in Wikipedia as one of the most haunted highway in the entire world.
The tragedy happened in the very early 80's. The highway was newly opened to the public. It's not yet multi-lane expressway like today and with only one tunnel at that time.

The drama began with a newly wed couple on their way going back for holidays to their home town in the East Coast.
They journeyed at night. It's still not a common practice to travel long distance at night in those days except for express buses and trucks. Because there're so few places along the way that opened at night in case you need to stop for a rest etc.
Especially this coast to coast travel which cut through Titiwangsa mountain range and thick rainforest of Pahang.

It's somewhere not long after they drove past through the tunnel, their car experienced a problem. The engine got over heated. Eventually the husband pulled over his car to inspect what might be the problem. Vapour rose up from the car bonnet.
After considering of logical ways to make his car running again, the man decided to find water to refill the empty radiator.
Although both of them were hesitate but the husband managed to persuade his wife that he won't be long. There should be some natural water sources nearby. (Indeed water is abundant in this country).
As a safety measure, the man told his wife to lock all doors and never get out of the car under whatever circumstances.
They were in the middle of mountain jungle. Its the habitat of all sort of wild life; elephant herd, tigers, bears...

The man took out a water container from the car boot and walked ahead. He's only armed with a small torchlight.

The woman could only watch her husband's walked ahead farther and farther. Sometimes his flashlight shone back to the car for a brief moment and then continue walking ahead again. Up to a point, the light was not seen anymore.
The woman's anxiety grew even more. It's pitch black darkness all around. It's a quiet night but trust me, the sound of the jungle can be deafening... Random strange sounds which we might have never heard of, sudden barking and hooting just behind our back. Adding up on top, those jungle insects create a perfect horror music in the background.
Once in a while there were trucks passing by. The bright beam gave a temporary relief and hope of seeing her husband's silhouette up ahead.
But no, her husband was nowhere to be seen. Back into the darkness.

5 minutes... 10 minutes.
Time flew half an hour or even longer. Still alone in the darkness.
Suddenly the woman felt a sudden jerk like something had hit her car. As it's too dark she couldn't see a thing. Then it happened again... and again. All she could do was just guessing from which side the force came from. The animal could be circling around her car but she had no idea what it was. Then she heard a scratching noise... on top of the car. The car swaying from side to side.
Oh my god... this thing must be big. Her uneasiness evolved into surmounting terror. How she had hoped her husband came back quickly but at the same time wished he better not. The rustling noise above her head continued. The animal didn't make any sign of leaving the car any soon.
Then... BANG!!!... the creature slammed hard the roof top.

Eternity passing by. Once in a while lights from the passing vehicles appeared for a brief moment, and zoomed away forever gone.
Somehow there's one time a car slowing down checking; the passenger in that car seemed terrified while pointing up telling something... then that car just zoomed away in no time.
The rustling noise and banging became more aggresive. BANG!!!... BANG!!!

Wooo...wooo..woo... Screeeechhhh !!!
A police patrol car came to the rescue. Stopped at the opposite side of the road.
Then nothing happened. The police turned off the siren and practically just parked their car there.
Only their beacon stay flashing red and blue light. Time stood still.
Even the rustling above had gotten quiet too... but surely it's still there.

After a long while, the woman saw the back windscreen of patrol car got lowered half way. Popped out of it a hailer/megaphone.

"Pay attention who ever in the car... Take off your shoes;...open the door and ran towards us as fast as you can... Don't look back!!!"
After the instruction was made, the hailer went back in and the windscreen rolled up. No other moves made, it's a stale mate.

Now it's up to the woman, whether or not she had enough courage to make that suicidal escape.
The woman just couldn't bear any longer in the car. She had no other option. So she made up her mind to comply with the police.
Slowly she took off her sandals as instructed, raising up her long gown properly... Bismillah...
She opened the door and dashed straight to the police car. It was the world record sprint of her life.

Only a few seconds before the woman approached the patrol car, the police opened the car door and snatched the woman to safety inside.
At that moment when the woman was about to enter the police car, she took a quick glance to see what was it.
There it was still on the car roof...
A huge horrendous gruesome hairy creature... eyes flaming red.
In one hand it held a HEAD... her husband's decapitated head !
BANG !!! it slammed the head to the car.

That's the last thing the woman remembered. She passed out.
For what the woman saw was surely not an animal at all. Call it as 'Jembalang Hutan' or 'Genderuwo' or simply the real life non-cartoon version of James P. Sullivan from the Monster Inc.

The search and rescue effort was made the following morning to find the missing husband.
His body was found lying near a water spring not far from there. It's his head which was never found.

1- Richi Arditya was right. The man had a pee at the water spot, which enraged the creature.

2- I'm throwing a quiz here, whoever got it right first wins 10 gold
Study the police car. What's weird about it by today's standard?

WINNER: mhifzan answered SIDE MIRROR.
Before the mid 80's, most cars didn't have a side mirror on the passenger's side.
