Meet the Serbs:

Today in front off you are two texts. First one is about STEFAN NEMANJA and second one is about Serbia in Second World War.

STEFAN NEMANJA (Old Church Slavonic: Стѣфань; ca 1113 – 26 February (13 February by the Julian calendar) 1199) was the Grand Prince (Veliki Župan) of the Serbian Grand Principality (Rascia) from 1166 to 1196. He was the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty. He is remembered for his contributions to Serbian culture and history, being the founder of the powerful Serbian state that would evolve into the Serbian Empire, and the national church. He was the father of Stefan Prvovencani, the first King of Serbia, and of Saint Sava, the first archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1196, he abdicated in favour of his son Stefan, and went to Mount Athos, where he became a monk and took the name of Simeon. Together with his son Sava, Simeon built the Hilandar Monastery from 1198-1199. The monastery later became the cradle of the Serbian Orthodox Church. After his death, Stefan Nemanja was canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church under the name Saint Simeon the Myrrh-streaming (Свети Симеон Мироточиви) after numerous alleged miracles following his death. He is regarded the most remarkable Serb for his literary contributions and altruistic attributes, according to the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Stefan Nemanja built the church of Đurđevi Stupovi (Tracts of St. George) in Ras in 1171. According to the legend, this was to thank Saint George for freeing him from the cave in which he was imprisoned by his brothers. The same year, Nemanja had his third son - Rastko. Nemanja attributed his rise to power to none other than Saint George.

"SHOOT, I'M STILL TEACHING" - Today Serbia marks the Day of Remembrance of the Serbian victims of the Second World War. The Memorial Day of the Serbian victims in World War II is meant to commemorate the 21st of October, 1941 and the bloody Autumn of that year, when the German occupying forces committed massive war crimes against civilians in city of Kragujevac and the rest of Serbia. On 20th and 21st of October 1941, the German occupying forces shot several thousand civilians in Kragujevac in retaliation, which is considered one of the most tragic events on the Serbian soil in World War II. At the Nuremberg trial it was accepted that about 7,000 civilians were executed in Kragujevac, while the newer researches verified the names of 2,792 people that were killed, including 270 children, of whom the youngest was 11 years old. GLORY TO THE VICTIMS!
