[Congress]Why use IRC?

Day 1,761, 08:03 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Lord Lewis Cromwell

Hello everyone,

In this article I'd like to give some details about IRC, it's usage for a lot of our nation and why a lot of us use it to communicate outside of articles and PM's in the game.

Lately with certain changes to the NHS and BEF units a lot of people have been asked to and even sometimes required to use IRC alongside their participation in the eRepublik game. I would like to show the basics behind this system in order to keep as many people involved as possible.

Firstly, IRC is a chat system which can be accessed simply by browser, but can also be accessed by independent software specifically designed for accessing it in particular. It's easy to use, free, uses a low amount of processing power (it doesn't slow down your computer) and allows users to chat in real-time with eachother, join multiple "rooms" to keep in touch with different people and so on.

Most of our political parties have their own public and private rooms, the government sections have their own each and most Military Units (MU's) have their own public and private rooms, too. People are encouraged not only by the eUK government, but by almost every country, party and MU in eRepublik to use irc for real-time orders, personal discussions, community bonding and even just for sharing links. It's safe to use, too, and allows you to keep your personal details safe with only the professional, non-eRepublik-related administrators of the server host knowing any of our personal details related to irc (which is just an email address).

On our forums, there is a link at the top for irc using the mibbit browser-based software. Clicking this sends you straight to irc where you'll have to choose a nickname and then begin chatting straight away on the eUK official channel with everyone else online in our nation. This is the simplest, quickest way to get on IRC chat!

Once online, you'll be required to register your nickname if you don't want anyone else to be able to take it once you've logged off. This is relatively simple, just type in the following:

/ns register your_password yourName@yourMailProvider

Where "your_password" is your chosen password and "yourName@yourMailProvider" is your email address! Then check your email and follow the instructions which should read to copy a confirmation code and type the following:

/ns confirm confirmation_code

Where "confirmation_code" is the code copied from your email (press CTRL+V to paste easily).

After that, you simply want to join the rooms you want to associate in, which you'll find easily associated with your parties/MU's and so on with a simple:

/j or /join #theroomiwant

If you like using IRC (or at least can tolerate it) and want to use it on a regular basis, it's possible to access it via bookmarking the mibbit chat website which is chat.mibbit.com or you can download a program (for example mIRC) which will allow you to access IRC from the desktop. These are all safe.

I understand that many people don't see the point and don't want to use a chat program alongside this rubbish game. I can completely empathise, I personally don't like using it that much either, but it enables communication and that is a good thing. Every avenue of communication is vital to establishing a greater community for us as a nation, especially when it's free and easy to use! If I can help people to get along then I'll do it!

The quizzes and banter are just an extra.

Leave a comment, PM me or your favourite Congressman if you have any questions.
