Argentinian hero with an Irish heart

Today I want to share with you a little bit of the story of the father of argentian navy, Guillermo (William) Brown.
He was born in Ireland, in Mayo county in 1777. In 1810 he arrived to Buenos Aires (Argentina) were he was witness of the revolucionary movements of the time. Because of that, he decide to stay in Buenos Aires and fight against the Spanish navy for the freedom of the countries of South America.

Brown was the first Admiral in the historia of the argentinian navy. He on active duty during the independences wars, the Brasil-Argentina war, and during the British-French block to the Buenos Aires port.

On march 17 1814, during an attack to the spanish navy Brown order the fife and the drum to play "Saint Patrick`s day in the morning"
In the Brasil-Argentina war, Brazilian fleet went to block Buenos Aires port with non less than 30 ships, Brown got a fleet of only 11 ships. He pronunce one of his most famous quotes: Fuego rasante, el pueblo nos contempla/ Open fire, the people are watching us. Many Argentinians saw the battle and the victory of Brown from the coast.
His grave is painted green to remmember his irish legacy.
He ended up having a friendship with Admiral Grenfell, his adversary in the Brazil-Argentina war.
