Alliances, Greed, and Squandered Money

The main two Alliances are CODE and Asteria. CODE is an EDEN try-hard Alliance and has the largest official member roster in the game. Asteria is an older Alliance with subordinate Alliance(s) in a conglomerate. They have been at quasi-war with each other for years, I say quasi-war because they hold internal training wars within themselves instead of solely conquering the enemy. Each force has had their good times and bad times. Sometimes the good times for one side can last years or the bad times lasting months, dictated by Plato's enforcement of the eRepublik Laws or the general spending habits around the games mediocre "events".
There are several other Alliances in the game at this time, too. All of which appear to be Defensive and/or Mutual training war Alliances. The remainder Alliances that are shown in-game are either lulz alliances, lulz dead alliances, or failed adventures in Player acronym creation. eJapan is now a recent member of the World Organization of Loyalty and Freedom. Much of its charter and information and history is outdated. It is still unclear what the Alliance aims to do but for all intents and purposes it should be seen as a Defensive and Mutual Training (fake war for greed) alliance.
After years of either inaction or simply swindling the game mechanics for free or cheaper gold, the entire world has seen little change in the daily, weekly, or monthly algorithms of ongoing Conflicts. In this post V2 eRepublik world we have no Strategy but to buy gold/energy bars for short lived glory. Determination rules make total conquest of an adversary expensive or a very certain and short temporality. The motive of nearly every administration in the past several years is to make his faction richer than the other guy. This has stagnated the game into a futureless and terrible quality 'massive multi-player online social strategy game' for all that have joined in the past 10 or so years.

Well, you can say all, but you can't say it's not a realistic game: in these 16 years it followed every step of this real capitalistic world. It means, the wars are mostly avoided because they are expensive. The real true war is just economic, try to become more rich than your neigbors. Individual gain counts more than the community. Alleances are money based.
So I can say eRepublik is the most realistic game ever. EVER !

Also in V1 it was slightly more realistic because resources were _fixed_ now whenever revenues are down they make a resource war event and everyone bends over and takes it in the ass.
IIRC post V2 and pre Work-as-Manager resources were Morphed into a facile approximation of Civ4's Resource Trade network "route to capital" as part of an overhaul. Prior to this, it would have been feasible for a dedicated group to Park in Siberia / Central Black Earth and keep its eCongress Seat whereas eParliament esque Legislative appointees by Party Leaders had yet to be implemented. eFortress Florida Forever!
The above, in combination with Formal introduction of SuperNational alliances ingame which eliminated most of the rote MPP / NAP votes of eCongress effectively rendered the eRepublik experience similar to AutoPilot / FSD mode for most.
For my Part eRep lost nearly all appeal once WaM arrived as a stopgap measure for the severely diminished playerbase; Rendering the economic facets "sugar-free" and no longer the eBrand California Cakes which I administered and even eAdvertised during V1 player Advertising.
Aside from #Memberries; eRep remains a Socially Centered eExperience
Yes, a lot of that time is cloudy to me too. Age or leaving the game periodically not sure which.

It is a very boring, mundane world. The world map looks like a kid colored it in with whatever colors they wanted and got bored halfway through. Progress is only determined and understood in numbers whether economic or demographic.

The main factor is fun. In earlier erep it was fun because it wasn't like logging into a Facebook page. An account could only shout 3 times a day. People were motivated to play as the little guy mattered.

The most discouraging thing right now, is that there is absolutely no reason for a new player to play the game. V+S.
Can't agree more and there's tons of inhibiting them from joining and growing or even enjoying.
