[MoE] Ministerial mystery?

Day 3,960, 14:24 Published in Netherlands Netherlands by Ministerie van Media en Recrui

Dear citizens of the eNetherlands,

It was a stormy autumn day as I stepped on my bike to go to my office in the Ministry of Education, the oh so familiar way to work which I have been cycling for almost 1000 eDays now. Once arrived at the Ministry I made my way though the dusty hallways towards my own office, passing by the office of the State Secretary, which I use as a storage place now since it has been empty for so long.

Afterwards I went through my daily mail, which contained nothing interesting except a letter from the Minister of Finance NoTie112 asking for evaluation of my participation in the recent housing project (which I greatly enjoy). Next up was my monthly round through the building itself, in particular the secret archive that is underneath the Ministerial building. Armed with a vacuum cleaner, several dust cloths and a battle axe (who knows what is hiding down there) I descended into the darkness...

After finding the light switch my eyes slowly adjusted to the brightness. There it was, years of knowledge stashed in shelf after shelf. Taking a moment to admire the archive my eyes fell on something that made my heart miss a beat. From a corner of one of the far left shelves two black eyes were staring back at me.

A rat! Oh god, I hoped that they didn't had an appetite for paper. While I was going through the doom scenarios in my head the little creature slipped away through the shelves. I followed it, hoping it would lead my to its nest. After a short while playing cat and mice the rodent suddenly went underneath a shelf at what I thought to be a dead end. Upon closer investigation it appeared to be that the room behind the shelf was hollow! I entered the before hidden passage filled with cobwebs and dust...

And what did I find there! Five ancient looking boxes were lined up on pillars in a semi circle in the back of the room. Each box was locked with a strange looking mechanism, moreover on each pillar a small description was engraved. To this day I have not figured out how to open the boxes, so that is where you come in. I really would like to make some space in the secret room so all the crap that is laying around in the office of the State Secretary can be stashed elsewhere. So five lucky people can get one box each including its mysterious contents. The only thing you need to do is find a way to open the box.

Here are the 5 boxes including the description engraved on their respective pillars:

Box 1

A simple wooden box, worn away by the ages and the damp in the room. Sealed by a number lock with 3 digits. The pillar bears the description:

"Twelve are we when taken all three.
Last one slain, then nine remain.
Never open goes the gate if our first is less than eight."

Box 2

An elaborately decorated box, almost like a coffin. Gargoyles line every side except the bottom. Once again a number lock holds the lid tight, but this time with only 1 digit. The pillar bears the description:

"A serial killer has received the death sentence. But as he was creative in his killings, the judge decided that his fate will be creative as well. The killer most choose between 4 rooms. The first contains a very angry gorilla, the second is full with horribly venomous snakes, and the third is full of tigers that haven't eaten in 2 years and the fourth contains a substantial amount of chlorine gas. Which room is safest for him?"

Box 3

A most extraordinary mechanism locks this box. When the lever is turned the box produces a small fragment of music. On the backside is a panel at which a line of text can be inserted. The pillar bears the description:

Box 4

A small box, again nicely decorated. It features several heads of persons who I have never seen before. The lock is a small panel with the inscription "name" under which a single word can be inserted. The pillar bears the a small image as description:

Box 5

A simple box with an elaborate paint pattern on it. The lock once again is a little panel in which text can be inserted. The pillar bears the description:

There are 5 people with different nationalities who live all in houses with different colours. These 5 people each use a certain quality (Q) of weapon, are a member of a different party, and keep a certain pet. None of them have the same pet, use the same quality of weapon or are a member of the same party.

The Brit lives in the red house.
The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
The Dane uses Q1.
The green house is on the left of the white house.
The green homeowner uses Q2.
The person who is a member of VN rears birds.
The owner of the yellow house is member of I&W.
The man living in the center house uses Q3.
The Norwegian lives in the first house.
The man who is member of DemNL lives next to the one who keeps cats.
The man who keeps the horse lives next to the man who is member of I&W.
The owner who is member of GPN uses Q4.
The German is member of REL.
The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
The man who is member of DemNL has a neighbor who usese Q5.

Who owns the fish?

So, if one of you knows the answer to one of these riddles, please send me a personal message. Only one box can be claimed per person, and since the boxes were found on eDutch soil only citizens of the eNetherlands can claim them. Please help me make room in my Ministry!
