Today is the 99th anniversary (18 March 1915) of end of naval war at Çanakkale (Gallipoli). It is also an important date for New Zealand and Australian nations as well.



Gallipoli region has always been an important place. Since Troy, it has been the stage for historical civilizations and legendary wars that changed the history of mankind.

I am sure that all of us know the legend of Achillus and Hercules at Troy war. Although Hercules was killed by Achillus, mankind history is full of leaders who declare that they are the followers of Hercules, not Achillus. For example; it is believed that Rome was established by the twin sons of Hercules; Romus and Romules. Gallipoli war was one of the latest epic stories of the past century that will always be remembered for generations to come, like Troy war. Furthermore, it is also said that the revenge of Hercules was taken at Gallipoli battle.

I am sending this brief note to commemorate people that lost their lives during all wars and let you think for a moment about the quote below, a tribute to the ANZACs, that was written by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (a former commander in Turkish army that played an important role during the Gallipoli battle) in 1934 while he was the first President of the new Turkish Republic:

“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”



Bugün, Çanakkale Deniz savaşının sona erişinin 99.yıl dönümü. ( Gelibolu ) Bu aynı zamanda Yeni Zellanda ve Avustralyalılar için de önemli bir tarih.

Gelibolu her zaman önemli bir yer olmuştur. Truva’dan beri, insanlık tarihini değiştiren tarihsel uygarlıklar ve efsanevi savaşlara sahne olmuştur.

Ben eminim ki, herkes Truva savaşındaki Achillus ve Herkül efsanesini biliyor. Herkül, Achillus tarafından öldürülmesine rağmen, insanlık tarihi Achillus’un değil, Herkülün izinden gittiğini söyleyen liderle doludur.

Örneğin; Roma, Herkül’ün ikiz çocukları tarafından kurulduğu sanılmaktadır. ( Romus ve Romules ) Gelibolu savaşı, tıpkı Truva savaşı gibi son yüzyılın gelecek nesilleri tarafından hatırlanabilecek en destansı savaşlarından biridir. Aynı zamanda, Gelibolu savaşında Herkül’ün intikamının alındığı söylenir.

Bütün savaşlar sırasında hayatını kaybeden insanları anmak ve Atatürk tarafından yazılmış aşağıdaki alıntı hakkında düşünmeniz ( anzaklar hakkında ) için mektubu paylaşıyorum.

"Uzak memleketin toprakları üstünde kanlarını döken kahramanlar; burada dost bir vatanın toprağındasınız. Huzur ve sükun içinde uyuyunuz. Sizler Mehmetçiklerle yan yana, koyun koyunasınız. Uzak diyarlardan evlatlarını harbe gönderen analar; gözyaşlarınızı dindiriniz, evlatlarınız bağrımızdadır. Huzur içindedirler ve huzur içinde rahat rahat uyuyacaklardır. Bu toprakta canlarını verdikten sonra artık bizim evlatlarımız olmuşlardır."
