The ePocalypse

Day 2,538, 15:50 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by ePocalypse

The prophecy is coming true. The ePocalypse is now inevitable.

Everyone knows that the game has been in decline for a long time now. It's become obvious that this downward spiral is irreversable.

I speak from the perspective of someone who has been committed to the eUK for my entire eLife of over 5 years but I'm fully aware that the decline isn't limited to eUK. It's pandemic.

For me, I always enjoyed the political side of the game and the community more than anything. Fighting helped pass the time and was also enjoyable from time to time.

I went from a weak noob to one of the strongest fighters in the country, on occasions turning the tide of battles single handedly. I've been a forum admin and a game mod (that job is no fun guys so blame the admins, not the mods). I've been possibly the most committed PP that the best party ever to exist in eRepublik (TUP) has had. I've deliberately avoided being CP which to this day I don't regret.

What I see now though is a world where ineptitude and incompetence is not only tolerated but encouraged. The vacuum created by the exodus of the masses has been filled with dark matter (or nothingness).

Congress has been a joke for a long time. CP candidates are sub par at best. Cabinets are poor. The offsite forums (particularly in eUK) used to be incredibly active but now your lucky to get a new thread during the course of a day. That from a forum with over 10,000 members. Even alliances which were always made from the best and most active, hardcore players are a shadow of those in the past.

Party politics doesn't really exist and that sure was fun. It's been a long time since there were proper politics in eUK with competing parties that tried to win fair. I'll always remember the old days of TUP vs UKRP because whilst we didn't always get on (many would say that is a massive understatement), we fought fair, we fought hard and we respected democracy.

So why has the game come to this point of no return. Well that's fairly simple. The owners and admins have failed to respond to the community. They always thought they knew best and they did what many unsuccesful business have done time and time again. They failed to listen to their customers and even more importantly, potential customers! I'm not going to go into details because it's all been said before and frankly, it's a waste of my valuable time.

Last week we had an (un)epic tournament. The servers failed. Cast your minds back to the fanfare surrounding the new battle page and how it used less resources. Remember that the number of players has been in serious decline. Witness the empty battlefields.

The admins released a big speech about the epic load on the servers. Come off it. Compared to year ago, the load must be miniscule. They can only have been downgrading servers in order to save money and had simply pushed it too far. Personally, I don't mind that. People make mistakes. Companies try to make profit. I don't even mind down time. I'm not particularly impressed with the apology though which glosses over the facts and signs off with some BS about making the new world a better place.

There are people from all walks of life that play this game. From pre-teens to pensioners. From the unemployed to millionaires. From the uneducated to those with the highest qualifications available. Countless times I have been surprised when I've found out more about some of the people who play. The best resource of the game has always been the players but how many of us would recommend the game to a real friend in it's current form? How many of us feel we have been valued as customers?

So now we've reached the point of no return.

Unless there are people out there who can see the potential of the game and make eRepublik an offer they can't refuse that is. This seems unlikely.

This article went on a bit longer, became more of a rant than intended and has gone off in a few unexpected directions. Thanks for reading though.

I might stick around to work and train. I might not.

It's been fun guys. Now, not so much. Thanks for the good times!
