I got in on the last of the 8" floppys. Boy, when those new-fangled 5" discs came out, we were gobsmacked. I seem to recall they could store as much as 360kb.
In mid 80's the "good" machines had double sided double density 5 1/4" floppy which was 360kb. Even with the new fangled 3 1/2" hard floppies with 1.44mb capacity the 5 1/4" hung on a few more years with quad density 720kb.
I was a super computer nerd. I upgraded my Gateway 486DX2-66V. Drives included a Teac 5 1/4" 720kb & 3 1/2" 1.44mb combo, second 3 1/2" to make copies and a 250mb QIC backup tape drive.
My pride and joy:

Back in the day... 🍒
good lord, who ever needed THAT much capacity??
Much like other fanatics it's not so much what is necessary but what is possible. You can get around town in a 15 year old Toyota but much more fun to restore a 1967 Camaro 396cid 4 speed stick.
My box had a 450mb Western Digital SATA drive and a 4x CD player too. (CD burners were available but very expensive.) Forget which video card I had but be sure it used the VESA bus. In 1990 it would play any game out there.
some of those old games where great though. had the original warcraft. Dune and old versions of prince of persia. as well as older dungeons and dragons. a map based one. though cant remember what happened to them
as well as donkey kong a helicopter hand concole
I just bought a 32gigbyte usb for 2 bucks
Crazy, ain't it. 2020 thumb drive is $2. 1990 box of ten 5 1/4" disks is $2.
