eIrish History A-Z American Friendship
On this A-Z History segment, A is for A is for America. Ireland and America have had a very different relationship most of this game. For the first 9 years the two countries never went to war against each other. During that 9 years we were at war with just about every other country in this game, but America who connected to us and was in different alliances a lot we never fought. We went to war against Uruguay and North Korea but not the big country next to us. I believe we were the only two countries with a shared boarder that did not go to war against each other in first 9 years. Even when they eventually attacked us and we were part of wiping them, we let them have there regions back the next week. I think the friendship must be based on how much Irish ancestry RL Americans have.

Stories time: I was Irish CP once a long long time ago and there was some big problem. Cannot even remember what it was. A lot of countries got together quickly on a Saturday on the IRC meeting to sort it out. It took a while to get a hold of American CP, they had to call his cell phone and wake him. He comes on the IRC and the two of us talked the whole time during the important meeting about his night before and how hung over he was in a side meeting. I asked him if he was paying attention to the big talk and he just said the rest of his people will sort it out. Thought it was funny and their CP was a character, had a good conversation that day, unlike most of those IRC meetings of that time. He was good at writing articles and let others sort out all the details, might of learned a leadership lesson there from that.

3 Quick Questions with Gormley

1.When I started playing this game you were a college student, get me caught up on your life now?

Well, I am actually still a student but thankfully a completely different course (it would be pretty sad if I was doing the same course 10 years later!)
I am in full-time employment now in a software-related role for an American multinational based in Cork. I am doing a related postgrad course by night. So, my time is 90% taken up with those 2 things at the moment.
Covid-19 hasn't affected my life very badly so I have been pretty lucky.

2.what is RL Gormley up to and why did you pick that name?

I actually had to Google that because I hadn't heard about him for ages. I saw him on a recent new episode of Reeling in the Years but otherwise, he has completely drifted away from public view. He is still involved in climate activism but other than that I don't really know to be honest.

The name choice was very peculiar, to be honest. Real-life John was in the news a lot in the 2007-2011 period and he first caught my attention in a major way when he had a run-in with Michael McDowell in 2007. I didn't want to use my real name and John was the first person that came to my mind for some reason.
I'm not really any bit like him so it's very strange. 🙂

3.Tell us something about Cork the rest of us do not know?

That could be difficult given that there are probably other Corkonians reading this. I'll try a fact that might not be widely known: West Cork has the only cable car in all of Ireland. It travels between Dursey Island and the mainland.

Get to know each other Irish Football
I will talk a little bit about my experience with Irish Football, for those of you who live in Ireland can you shout out who your favorite local team is. For those outside Ireland please south out any local sports you go to.
When I lived in Ireland my son was in primary school and came home talking about the big English clubs he liked. You pass down certain values to your kids. One value I wanted to pass down was *You always support your local sports team*. Why this is important to me I do not know, just one of those things I hated in others and did not want my son doing it. So we lived in Monaghan and stared going to Monaghan United games regularly. They were in Div 2 of Ireland which is very low. Some games there were more people on the pitch then in the stands. The football club allowed the pub that was at the grounds to be open longer, seems like the reason they were in existence. Every Friday night I went to matches for years. I would take a car full of other kids from my estate to matches. Literally kids would be standing in front of my house waiting for me to say “check with your mom and jump in”. All the users, directors, and even coaches knew me. I would travel for some of the bigger games and go see Shelburne matches in Dublin with a mate who supported them. When I left Ireland one of my friends went to the club and told them I was leaving, they gave me a jersey from one of the players from the night before and a card signed by most of the club. Follow a big team in America or Europe and I do not think they will do that, unless you spend millions. Shortly after I left Ireland the club folded from lack of attendance. They still do youth football. The two games we had against Brey for relegation are some of my best sports memories. I friend wrote me that because I was not bring a car full of kids to every match they could not afford to go on, lol. My son still has a Monahan united scarf on his wall in his bedroom and only supports local teams. Lets hear your sports stories in the comments.

Weekly Bit of Fun Weekend Recipe
Answer to yesterday question. I was never arrested in Red square, but some one did tell me that story about them self. RK guessed I never met 4 world leaders, I met Nelson Mandela once, one of the biggest moments of my life, along with US president, Irish Taoiseach and shook hands with the Croatian president who I had to ask a very annoyed policeman latter who he was.
My wife makes me cook once on the weekend. So I am always looking for a good recipe and something different. Please post a link to your favorite recipes down below, I mighttry one this weekend. I never know what to cook.
I grew up in Philadelphia. We are famous for two sandwiches. The Philly cheese Steak and Hoagies. It was National hoagie day this week so going to post my Ham and Cheese Hoagie recipe. I had a business and was going to sell sandwiches in it so actually put work into coming up with this recipe. I got sandwiches delivered from all the popular shops in Philly to my Mom house and her deconstruct them weighing, taking pictures, and measuring thickness. She thought I was crazy but gave her something to do for a day. This is an easy recipe because all you do is assemble it. Next Friday I will put a more complicated recipe in article. Irish Ham is some of the best in the world I have tried, and Eden cheese is a good substitute for American cheese.
