1392: End of the reign of Go-Kameyama.
1500: Death of Go-Tsuchimikado 103th emperor of Japan (1464-1500).
1600: Tokugawa Ieyasu defeats the leaders of rival Japanese clans in the Battle of Sekigahara, which marks the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate, who in effect rule Japan until the mid-nineteenth century.
1600: Death of Toda Katsushige, Japanese warlord.
1675: Death of Emperor Higashiyama of Japan.
1881: Ito Hirobumi is appointed to chair a government bureau in charge to write a constitution for Japan which will go into effect in 1890.
1894: Birth of Rampo Edogawa, Japanese author and critic.
1895: Japanese forces invade Taiwan and take Tainan, capital of the short-lived Republic of Formosa.
1920: Beginning of the Battle of Changshanli, between Japanese and Korean, until 26.
1931: The Sakurakai, a secret society in the Imperial Japanese Army, launches an abortive coup d’état attempt.
1938: The Japanese troops take Canton (Guangzhou), in China.
1944: In the first kamikaze attack, HMAS Australia is hit by a Japanese plane carrying a 200 kg (441 pound) bomb off Leyte Island, as the Battle of Leyte Gulf began.
1959: Birth of Ken Watanabe, Japanese actor.
1965: Birth of Hisashi Imai, Japanese singer-songwriter and guitarist.
1970: Japan publishes its first White Paper on defense
1971: Death of Naoya Shiga, Japanese novelist.

1197: Birth of Juntoku, 84th emperor of Japan (1210-1221).
1331: Kogon, first emperor to occupy the Northern Court of Japan, is enthroned.
1335: Ex-emperor Hanazono becomes a Zen priest.
1625: Death of Kikkawa Hiroie, Japanese politician.
1939: Birth of Susumu Kurobe, Japanese actor.
1946: Birth of Yuko Maruyama, Japanese actress.

930: Death of Daigo, 60th Japanese emperor (897-930).
1868: In Japan, by a decree, the Meiji era is set up. The emperor Mutsuhito recovers full power from the shogun.
1920: Birth of Ted Fujita, Japanese meteorologist.
1939: The Japanese Mitsubishi G4M twin-engine « Betty » Bomber makes its maiden flight.
1942: The Battle for Henderson Field begins during the Guadalcanal Campaign and ends on October 26.
1944: The Battle of Leyte Gulf begins, the largest naval battle in history begins in the Philippines.
1955: Birth of Ryoko Sakaguchi, Japanese actress.
1978: China (Deng Xiaoping) and Japan (Takeo Fukada) exchange treaty ratification documents in Tokyo, formally ending 40 years of hostility.
1983: Birth of Sayaka Isoyama, Japanese actress.
1991: Birth of Princess Mako, daughter of Prince Akishino and granddaughter of emperor Akihito of Japan.
1992: Emperor Akihito becomes the first emperor of Japan to stand on Chinese soil.
2004: A powerful earthquake and its aftershocks hit Niigata prefecture, northern Japan, killing 35 people, injuring 2,200, and leaving 85,000 homeless or evacuated.
2012: Japan’s justice minister quits after calls for his resignation over past ties to an organized crime syndicate.
2012: A group of South Korean lawmakers visits an isolated set of islands at the centre of a territorial dispute with Japan — prompting an immediate protest from Tokyo.
