I wonder how many people think about the pilgrims on Thanksgiving. How many reflect what the holiday means, and how it came to be.

It is traditionally thought the pilgrims sat down with their native American neighbors to give thanks to god for their survival over the past year. And to celebrate their first successful harvest.

Soon, however, the Natives fled back into the forest. And allied themselves with the French, with plans to exterminate the pilgrims.

When I think of the pilgrims, I see a man dressed in black, with big buckles on his shoes, wide-brim hat, and carrying a musket. The woman in a floor-length dress, Her head covered with a hat or handkerchief.

They don't drink. They don't believe in singing, dancing, or even playing cards.

They read the bible every day and sit in a church on hardwood pews for hours listening about wrath and damnation.

It is odd to imagine the people who have immigrated to this country. The Mexicans who came to Los Angeles, Hatiens that have taken residence in south Florida, or Russian Jews who moved to Brooklyn celebrating Thanksgiving.

Because after all what do Americans founding fathers have to do with any of them but on the other hand what do any of us have to do with the pilgrims.

Happy Thanksgiving, eat well, much love.
